Saw the doc today. Evidently I have this lovely condition (as I suspected). He put me on 2 mg of Orap (pimozide) twice daily (total of 4 mg). Told me that the Orap would help with the tics the vocal tics/coprolalia in particular. This Orap, which is a neuroleptic, sounds like some powerful medicine. I'm hoping that I won't have any side effects from it and that it helps me. Doc said that I'd notice something within a week or thereabouts. Hopefully, I won't have to go up on the dosage level because you start seeing the side effects at the higher dosage levels.
The doc explained to me that the spasms in my vocal cords comes about because I'm trying to hold the words back. I determined that this tic happens over one hundred times a day (this is a conservative estimate). The thing is that by not actually saying anything I create a tension in my mind (kind of like an increasing pressure in my head) that causes me distress/anxiety. This discomfort is only relieved by actually releasing the tics. Of course, saying these bad words in public isn't usually an option for me because I'm generally around polite company. The weird thing is that it seems to act up extra on me when I'm at church which is one of the worse possible places for this to happen at obviously. Likewise it tends to pop up when I'm at school. This TS is weird isn't it? --Scott

I didn't realize adding the "give you a hug" little yellow icon guy was going to post to a different place than here.... feel free to read the previous discussions to get to know the folks on this TS site, better. Sometimes a lot of folks post and sometimes not so many... very variable. but it is definitely a fine place to post when you've just got to talk about the TS issues going on....

I will just tell you honestly that most of the time it is hard to find the right medicine. But keep trying. That is great that it doesn't act up a lot in church. My tourettes also gets lighter in some situations, which makes it hard for people to understand how bad it it. My worst tics are when I'm at home. If you have any problems with the tics at school, anycomments made by people or anything, I'm here to help. :) I'm also here for you with anything even if it's not tourettes. I hope we can talk sometime.
