This community is dedicated to those afflicted with a tic disorder. A tic disorder is one in which uncontrollable muscle spasms that can range from small annoyances to major disruptive occurrences. .
I've had tourettes since I was about 15 and it was very mild like when you get a chill and your body just twitches, then now(I'm 19 now) I got a verbal tic where I yell "What" and jerk my head to the right, then now again out of the blue I needed to jerk my head up and down. I was never officially diagnosed because there is no definitive diagnosis. My family thinks its for attention and I just want answers. Any develop random tics that are completely out of the normal for you??

Farmer girl, I wish I could give you the answers you're looking for, but I can't. I've had Tourette's since I was such a young kid. I do know that Tourette's syndrome specifically is usually diagnosed between ages 5 and 9, and yes, there is a definitive diagnosis. It's odd that you would randomly develop it at 15. Tics do come and go quickly sometimes, and can be completely random and unpredictable as to what they are. Everybody's different. There are other tic disorders other than Tourette's, however. I don't know as much about that, but it sounds likely that you have something like that, maybe just not Tourette's specifically. I would talk to your doctor, and maybe set up an appointment with a specialist of some sort? A neurologist or something. Either way, it can be frustrating when your family isn't understanding and supportive, but try not to be too harsh on them, they truly don't understand, and tics are ANNOYING. (We with them know that more than anyone, but at least we get used to them, and know that they aren't controllable. Others tend to forget that.) have patience, have peace, and as hard as it can be when you're the one in the difficult position, try to have empathy. Sending positive calming vibes your way<3

I started having tics and involuntary shaking in my early 20's. I ended up getting brain scans (Amen's clinic SPECT scan) and was told I had an over active basil ganglia and they could show me pictures of the area of my brain affected. There was no official diagnosis (term) for it since it is uncommon nor was any treatment recommended. If you want to have the brain scans to prove to your self and family that you aren't faking it go for it... but it cost money that might not be covered by insurance and may not give you much assistance with the tics themselves. Don't know if this helps any... you may have a different condition any way.

I agree that 15 is really rare for onset of TS. Were you vaccinated close to the time of onset? Both of my children have TS. Supplements help. My son stopped having tics. You can contact me by email if you'd like to know what he used...thruthefirepubl@aol.com
