I'd try supplements first before all that. We use the bontech and they completely stopped our son's tics. He's done really well with them.
http://bonniegr.com/ Surgery is extreme. Maybe the Dr. is looking to make money. Here in the US if a Dr. said that to me i'd look out for my wallet, some of them just think money. You could also try biofeedback. Worked somewhat for our son, but not long lasting. Good luck.

Hi, thanks for your reply. We have tried all the supplements over the years and many many other expensive treatments including biofeedback that have never touched the tics. I have been in contact with others who have had this done and they have had amazing results. Unfortunately my son cannot take medications for his tics and the dbs is our only chance at a normal life. The doctor we have is Professor Peter Silburn a leader in this field and would not take a patient on lightly. He isn't interested in the money but is genuinely interested in helping people. Will even let you pay the operation off over eighteen months.

Perhaps it is not my place to say, but I think you have to take the chance, otherwise you will never know if it could have worked. good luck

To anyone who has been following my posts over the years, you will know the battle we have had with our 18 year old son with ts. I am happy to report that he just underwent deep brain stimulation on the 3rd of November and I am very happy to say that the tics have improved so much that it almost hard to believe. They are about 80 percent better. He is a much happier boy after this procedure. It will take about six months to get the right settings for him as they have to slowly ramp up the stimulation. In the meantime we are having to get used to the quietness in the house after years of screeching and jerking. I am desperately trying to get this surgery. I cannot afford it, and my insurance doesn't cover it. If anyone has any information about dcotors who do this and work with Medicaid, please let me know. Thanks!

Ive been trying to get some biofeedback, its been suggested to me by several different people. The cost of it is whats getting in the way :/ Has anyone ever had this done, and how helpful is it?

We did try neurofeeback and spent quite a lot of money on my son but it didn't work for us. My son has just come through the deep brain surgery and the results have been very good.

My son has had two DBS surgeries at Emory University for severe Tourettes.
The first surgery, they implanted int the GPi and the second set it the thalamus. He was taking almost 50 pills a day before the surgeries and was unable to walk upright due to a tic that caused him to tap the ground as he walked. The first surgery controlled the coprolalia 100% and helped with the motor tics. The surgery to the thalamus was much more successful at controlling motor tics. He is down to about 20 pills a day and we are still lowering his medication gradually. It was a very difficult recovery and was not an off switch like we had hoped for but it has greatly reduced the tics and we would do it again. It has been 4.5 years since his last surgery and he is still improving and they are still making adjustments to his stimulator settings.
