This community is dedicated to those afflicted with a tic disorder. A tic disorder is one in which uncontrollable muscle spasms that can range from small annoyances to major disruptive occurrences. .
Are there any adults out there who have found this much harder once you hid late thirties-on? My tics have gotten worse in some ways and the depression and OCD of it all are making me think it's not going to get any better. THat scares me. I have lost the joy of life. Any comments would help. THanks. I have no where else to turn.
I had severe tourettes and OCD when I was a child and up through my young teen years, but then it pretty much "disappeared" (at least the severe tics did) when I was in Jr. High School. I still had a few mild tics. But for the most part I felt "cured". But now in my 40's I am PRE-menopausal and my hormones are going nuts, and for the first time, some of the vocal tics from my childhood are back. These are the un-noticeable tics that people can't see. (such as making "air clicks" in my throat by short quick exhales and it feels like "clicks" in my throat.) Or I also have back the vocal tic that sounds like a door creaking...but I only do that when nobody is around. I can do it while me and my husband watch T.V. because then he can't hear me (He's a little hard of hearing anyway). I personally believe that things like hormonal imbalance, or stress, or even chemical imbalance in the brain can bring the tics back again after a long time period where the tics have abated.
Of course my OCD is still there. My 21 year old daughter has OCD too. She takes prozac because without the prozac she says the "mental part" of the OCD would drive her crazy. (The obsessing part).
My nephew was also just diagnosed with Tourettes & OCD & Anxiety (over the tics). And my father, brother and sister all have tics too.
