I am new to this group. I am 61 yrs old. As a child I had a tic in that I would blink my eyes. Of course my mother thought it was just a habit. She encouraged me to break the habit but she had no idea how to help me. I think I was around 6 or 7 yrs old. Eventually the blinking stopped. I had no tics through my teen years or in my early adult years. When I turned about 50 my tics came back in ways that are hard to explain. They change from time to time. I do definately associate being fatigued or stressed with the frequency of my tics. There are days, very few, when I have hardly any tics at all. I love those days!! But eventually they come back. I started asking my doctor early on about my nervous tic. They all looked at me like "well I don't know a thing about that" and I never was diagnosed or treated. I recently was seeing a new psychiatrist about anxiety and depression when I mentioned my tics. It didn't take him long to diagnose me with Tourettes. That word was so hard to hear because of the stigma associated with it. In another way I felt relieved someone finally understood what I had been going through. I am on 200 mg of Gabapentin twice a day. It seemed to help quite awhile but not so much the past week or so. My tics have been so bad involving facial movements and my neck and shoulders that I am so uncomfortable. I feel dizzy and out of balance at times. I know my life could be much much worse, but frankly Tourettes sucks!! It wears me down. I am able to conceal my tics most of the time by just not doing it. But boy do they come out with a vengeance when I let my guard down. My husband and family have most likely noticed my ticing but I've never told them. I really want to but with my depression, add, anxiety, and mood disorders I dread telling them I have one more thing. I've really needed someone who understands so thanks for giving me this outlet. Anyone else have tourettes that started up again in adult years? Anyone have a cure?? Haha! Joking.
