How does one learn to adjust to tinnitus if the headnoises constantly keep adjusting in pitch. When my tinnitus first started on December 21, 2004 it was a very high pitched hissing/whistling sound and it took me over two years to get to the point where I didn't really notice the sound during the day only at night. Then the nosie level increased for really no apparent reason and went from a whistling/hissing sound to hight pitched ringing/beeping sounds and again took me a very long time to get used to the new noises and level. Now I find myself struggling again do to a spike in my T. The hissing sounds are back which I guess is better than the ringing/beeping sounds I once heard and the level of the noise has slightly increased. I just don't understand why this is happening or what I am doing to cause this to happen. I am a stay at home mom, exercise 5 to 6 days a week, on a low sodium/no caffine diet, use maskers , wear ear protection when needed, in therapy (massage, chiropractic) and live in a very quite subdivison. I am at a loss and find myself slowly slipping into depression once again which I would like to avoid. Any positive words or suggestion of new treatments would be much appericated.
Thanks and have a blessed day

HRiddle thats exactly how i feel, had some peace and now it just started a high pitch sound in my ears. Havent done anything to make this happen, so its obviously a shock! My first act was to take xanax, but then i thought i ll become mentally addicted to it, so why dont i let tinnitus do its thing for 1-2 weeks, if i dont see a change then i ll definately take it. Its my advice to you, dont take anything for 1-2weeks, cause then u l thnk T lowered down because of x drug which might not be true. Do some yoga, meditate but dont take any drug yet. Maybe is the weather change dat made most of us feel a difference in T sound.

HRiddle, It sounds like you are doing everything that you can to help yourself so I am sure it is discouraging. I had low tinnitus for many years and how I wish i could go back to that level! I think that sudden loud noise made mine worse, but I cannot be sure of that. I think that sometimes it just gets worse for no reason. I guess if researchers could figure out what causes it in the first place and what makes it vary, they might be able to figure out how to cure it. (or at least help it). I wish I had a suggestion but you already do the best you can. I had not realized that caffeine was possibly involved and I am a coffee drinker so I will cut down on that. I know that wine makes mine worse, temporarily, but I really enjoy that so not sure I want to give it up. I use ear plugs when in loud places ( I put a decibel meter app on my phone so I can check sound levels) but I still live in fear that it will get worse. Cannot really help you but I surely can sympathize!

Your maskers could be making things worse by aggravating your tinnitus. Its been known to happen.
