Tinnitus: Is it a problem w/ the ear or the brain?

Hi,

I keep reading that it has something to do with the brain.

On the other hand, some say the ear.

My Ear specialist said there is nothing that can be done about the ringing.

He tested my hearing and it’s pretty good for a person of my age.

I wonder what makes it higher at times than others.

Mine showed up after I got Shingles. (It appears it is in my right ear.)

Since my husband and I got Shingles, at the same time, he started hearing the ringing about the same time I did.

When my tinnitus gets louder, I ask my husband how his ringing is - we seem to be on the same frequency (no pun intended.)

I’d like to ask anyone on this forum their experiences with tinnitus. What seems to make it louder? What calms it? Does the weather have an effect on it?

I have been taking the Lipo-flavonoid pills, it appears it helps a little.

I’m looking for something that I can do that will lessen the sound.

BTW, when I was much younger, I remember that I could hear these frequencies and I thought it was related to my metal fillings.

The problem with 'experts' is that they specialize. Many specialists also don't keep up to date with new research, which is NOT helpful. They keep going, earning their not so modest living.
I know an associate professor of neurology who says tinnitus has to do with the ears (way behind the times) and an audiologist who said to me a few years back that it's perceived sound . . . . well yes and no.
It has to do with both neurology (the brain) and audiology (the ears).

I believe mine is in the auditory processing part of my brain. It is constant, and loud. My life has been horrible since it started.

I had a recent visit to an ENT doctor who specializes in tinnitus and she said that the noise is created by the brain because the brain isn't getting the noise/sounds that it expects. I went to a different ENT office and there were signs on every door saying the the noise is NOT from your ear but from the brain but when I asked for an explanation, the audiologist couldn't explain. So this recent visit was clarifying. I hope things get better for you. I'm getting a totally different kind of hearing aid (my third).

Thank you for responding. I feel the better my sleep is, the less intense the tinnitus is. All in all, it is awful. My husband and I have it. So far manageable without hearing aids. I try to ignore it and try not to get depressed over it. I guess as we age, more things break down. Take Care.
