2 months in to T .. still trying to find my "triggers"... I know a few things for sure.. A nap, even for a few minutes, is a disaster.. I awake with bilateral screeching , even if i dare to doze for 5 minutes.. I must sleep a full night or not at all, as a poor nnights sleep seems to be a trigger as well.. I function best with 7 hours or better.. naps are OUT unless I want to endure hours of screaming T as my reward for a 10 minute nap...
Terrific, the thing I need most, sleep, is what sets my T off and running.
Just great...
Still haven't found any food triggers.. I may have one, or more but am not certain...
Today, I went to a Chinese restaurant, and taunted my T to do its worst.. I loaded up with multiple plates and bowls of spicy, salty , MSG laden goodness, and lots of dark strong Chinese tea... Came home and crashed on the couch watching the NY Giants game, and slept for 1/2 hour.. awoke with the usual bi lateral screaming, but that always happens if I take a nap..
. If MSG and salt are going to set me off, how long does that take??.. If tonight and tomorrow are "normal" T days, should I consider myself lucky, and not worry too much about salt, msg, etc???.... I usually go very easy on salt and salty foods most days anyway for blood pressure reasons, but do like to eat out on occassion, and don't want to worry about salt when I am out trying to enjoy myself with my wife.
Like everyone here, I need to try and enjoy a life that has largely been devoid of joy, since I awoke with this demon in my head on 7/10/11.
IF MSG or salt bothers my T, is it days. hours, before onset, and typically how long would the "spike" last?... I know everyone is different, but personal experiences would give me a basic guide... bob

" Name A Term Used In Football " ?
Actually, I may start drinking a bit more.. I like red wine and usually drink a little each day , to keep my cholesterol down.. It really works well.. I never was much of a drinker otherwise, but may start keeping beer around.. I like it, and if it calms my nerves down, is it really any worse than popping a benzo??.. not in my book.. If alcohol is NOT a trigger to my T, it may become part of my overall coping mechanism, more than just a few ounces of wine each day... People have been using it as a coping tool for ages.
Loriemar.. thats a real drag.. I love sweets.. Actually I was avoiding them as I wanted to lose weight.. Since my T started, I have dropped an alarming amount of weight, and now I actually need the calories..
I eat a lot of fruit and it has not proven to be a trigger ..
MSG is more of a; the more you use the higher concentration in the blood stream. So many may not notice anything for a day or so.
my wife said.. "its just an MSG rush.. relax , calm down.etc..
I calmed down, and it never happened again, but it happened while I was eating, not hours or days afterword...
What I experienced was called Chinese Restaurant Syndrome... Google it, pretty interesting stuff, and yes I can certainly see where T sufferers would list MSG as a major trigger... In my case, I have my doubts, as I was fine Sunday night after the big MSG bomb was digested. [well as fine as someone can be with twin whistles in his brain]
I will keep my salt intake low as I have been doing for several years, but thus far, I haven't noticed it being a "trigger".. Sleep of any type, from 8 hours to 1 minute is my major "trigger".. My head screams bilaterally upon awakening, and after several hours usually calms down to one whistle on the left side, or at best a summer night field of crikets and katydids which is easier to mask and manage...

I think I am learning that there is no right or wrong answer other then those with a claim diagnoses for a cure.
I have tested MSG with my T and there is affect on it. As well as sugar and salt.
I am also finding that how a person got T affects the triggers.
I do understand why you disagree, but I think the patterns are far wider and cause even wider then that. I do not have the answers, but I have questions and getting answers to those one at a time. LO problem is I have about 1000 questions so this could be awhile.
Since glutamate increases the neuron activity in your brain, sugar (processed, honey, molasses, MSG) all spike my T within minutes of eating it. Fruit, however, does not, nor do Stevia or Xyletol.
Salt does not seem to bother my T, though it might for those with high blood pressure.
Chocolate spikes my T, even 100% dark with no sugar in it.
Alcohol is actually a glutamate inhibitor, and green tea, red wine, turmeric, and cinnamon all reduce sugar in the blood steam, thus less gets to your brain. On a good T day (when my T is low), drinking green tea will actually make my T go even lower. Others on here have said the same. Taking 2 turmeric pills on a good T day will also lower my T for awhile, as will (usually) red wine in moderation. Some on here have said one glass of red wine lowers their T, but 2 glasses sets it off.
Now caffeine is an interesting topic because all the docs will tell you if you have T to stay away from it. But a recent clinical trial published in ATA magazine showed that caffeine does not affect T--neither makes it worse nor better. Caffeine/coffee (a vasoconstricter) does not seem to affect my T at all, though there are people on this site who say drinking coffee actually LOWERS their T. I will say that ESPRESSO seems to help my T--if I have low T in the morning, get a large coffee with espresso shots in it, and nurse it all day (taking sips every so often), my T will stay low all day. This happens every time, even though I have the kind of T that starts low in the morning and gets louder and louder as the day goes on.
I used to think the "vasoconstriction" of espresso and red wine helped reduce or at least maintain my T level because the constriction was reducing the glutamates getting into my brain. However, other vasoconstrictor foods on this list below (such as sugar, MSG, chocolate) spike my T--so maybe it isn't the vasoconstriction after all! : )
