I find mindfulness meditation works for me ,reduce stress then you will reduce tinnitus.
G/L IT WILL GET BETTER.
I take meds to get and maintain sleep (combination of Lorazepam and Hydroxyzine, almost never a problem *getting* to sleep), but that gets me only until around 5 am. I used Bedphones and masking sounds to try to sneak in another couple of hours, but it's more like lying awake with someone screaming in your ears.
Once I get up and go through my morning routine (shower, shave, etc.) the T sometimes settles down within an hour or so to a fairly low level in one ear, which I can mask using a Bluetooth earpiece and an iPod. That's probably two out of three days. At other times, it stays moderately loud, in both ears (like today). I can still make it more tolerable through masking, but it's more annoying when it happens. Fortunately, I *rarely* have two really bad days in a row, so I can always look forward to tomorrow.
And FWIW, I find that alcohol greatly lessens the T, sometimes to the point of not needing any masking assistance at all. (The alcohol probably amplifies the effect of the Lorazepam, since they both operate on the same neurotransmitters. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but a glass of good bourbon sometimes makes for a very pleasant evening.
What you have (high T level upon waking) is very common, I believe. (It's not great for sex though, since I'm pretty tired at bedtime from the sleep meds and/or bourbon, and the screaming T in the morning is not conducive to romance. We've managed some afternoon times, especially on weekends.)

Since your's is a constant annoyance, would perhaps a masking device really assist you. This has really helped others whereupon the regular t sounds are masked. I realize the expense, but perhaps insurance may pick up the tab to some degree.
Please excuse the thought, if you have been there and considered that.
I'm glad you are intermitant tinnitus, I wish this hell on no one and if you get breaks here and there GOOD for you:)
