Bebee--Why not take it every day before bed if it helps you sleep and lowers your T on most days? Just getting a good sleep can help lower your T and help you handle your T better, too. (If sleep is a problem for you--it may not be.) Amatryp or Nortryp--both are pretty safe tricyclics and not nearly as addictive as a benzo. If you can take benzos "at will" without getting hooked, you definitely aren't likely to get addicted to a tricyclic, if that is your fear.

I'm the expert when it comes to Amitriptyline. Have been taking it daily before bed for over 11 years now. When I skip a day my tinnitus is higher for the rest of the day. I have proven that. For me it's a safe drug to be taken daily for many years. I'm on a 50mg dose which is at the lower end.

Have never had to increase the dosage for all these years. Also have been taking .5mg of Clonazepam with the Amitriptyline for those same number of years. I get a solid 8 hours of sleep. This also helps with the tinnitus. "If I need to take it every day all day,I'll pass,but if it helps on an "as needed basis,the local "pill pusher" would prescribe it for me".

Is the local "pill pusher" your doctor? You make it sound like your buying it from some drug dealer on the street. You do realize by taking a small amount at night might just help you on a daily basis with your tinnitus. I'm proof that a daily small dose of Amitriptyline does help my tinnitus every day. I would at least give it a try. You just might be surprised with the results. It's your call.

DD.. yes the "local pill pusher" is my doctor.. I doubt there is much demand on the street for tricyclics. I am just trying to find things to help out.. i am sleeping ok most nights [thank You lord!], but my T is tough to deal with some days, even after 7-8 hours of sleep... I like the idea of possibly taking it before bed, and have a lower T day the following day... Like everyone else here, the lower the volume,. the better day I have, and vice versa.. I will get a scrip next time I see my GP... bob

Ive been taking 10 mg of Amitriptyline nightly. It definitely helps with sleep, as well as a .25 mg (half of a 5 mg) Klonopin. I sleep good. Tinnitus doesnt interfere with my sleep. Im on the lowest dose and if you dont like it you can stop it easily. It worked the first night I took it.

sugaboog, Same here! Remember taking my very first dose of Amitriptyline. It made me want to go to bed and sleep. Reduced the stress level and it was nice to get a full nights sleep. Still use it.

My doctor assures me that 10 mg is such a small dose and that it is very easy to stop. The Klonopin however isnt so easy to stop, gotta taper that. May get off of these some day when I see results from starting my bio-identical hormones for menopause. We'll see but no pressure to stop them. They work for me.

Yes 10mg is a small dose. Was told this is all most people need to help with there sleep. I think you can go up to 300mg.

Hi I had these prescribed in a minute dose when I had a herniated disc. I was advised to take them every night no later than 7.30 as even a small dose will make you sleep and if it's taken later in the evening you feel groggy the next morning. They work if you take the recommended dose for the recommended length of time and at least you sleep without the t sound. Peace LV
