Weird title yes, but there's a reason for it... I am just over halfway through of a full scrip of oral prednisone that I have had since 2/11.. It was prescribed for my very bad back, but I used a few Arthrotec at the time, and they helped a lot, major pain cleared up, so i shelved the steroids..
Along with T that started full time on 7/10/11. my right ear had lost significant hearing, especially in the high end above 8 K or so.. 2 audiology tests said the loss was severe, despite that fact my word recognition was 96% and termed excellent...
After reading about how pred has helped many people with hearing loss, and having an unused scrip sitting there, i figured I would just use it, as my back, hips and shoulder are all killing me anyway, and have been for months.. I have trouble getting around some days. Adding further fuel to the anxiety and depression of sudden, invasive T...
the results have been dramtic.. MUCH better hearing in the bad right ear, Much improved high end.. I can hear S and C and SH sounds with much better clarity, The low end muffling is improved.. When I snap my fingers near each ear, the left one has been clearer for years.. I would hear the sharp snap, including whatever high frequencies were produced.
When I snapped it near my right ear, I would hear a percussive mid rangy but muffled thud.
Now after the pred, they sound identical.. same volume, same SNAP, with just that tiny high end ring audible in each ear in the same way.
There is still some difference with headphones listening to music, but not near as severe as it was.. the pred has REALLY helped my bad ear.. I can REALLY see why its prescribed for differnt forms of hearing loss. It has made a big difference .
T is unchanged for now, but I am hopeful that by some miracle, my befuddled brain wil say..
"" Oh THERE'S that 10K "S" sound..." I guess I can turn down the volume, and stop looking for it"...
I can only pray..
Oh yeah,, I even went down to the little creek near my house, and fished for an hour or so.. the babbling water helped mask the T a bit, and the distraction of an activity I have loved since childhood was nice...No it wasn't a LOT of fun like it would have been 3 months ago, before the beast came to stay,, but as I stated it was a welcome distraction.. Caught 6 smallmouth bass as well,... 5 of which are in the fridge waiting for my fillet knife

Baby steps, I know, but I have had enough of this crap, and am trying to fight back against the t monster... The more I understand him, the less he scares me.
I WANT my life, it belongs to me, NOT this damn T demon..
I don't want any more episodes of being on my knees asking God to take me home.. Thats what the beast wants and he won't get it,, not anymore.. I'll just pick up my damn fishing rod instead... bob

I doubt TRT will help any more than the net has been helping.
I may still go to the U of Buffalo, as they are one of the best in the nation in T research, from what I gather.
they said they demonstrate devices for T.. However, if I am hearing pretty well, should I blow $7,000 on the Widex 440 with Zen??
Should i blow a couple grand on a masker?? Why bother??.. I can download white or pink noise FREE fom the net onto my $10 mp3 player.. Now that I haven't panicked in several days, and i am more PISSED OFF at my t than afraid of it, I am starting to question the money involved, as oppossed to the benefits realized...
I have a strong faith in God, and His strength has upheld me thus far.. I pray for each one here every day, and i now am starting to see the small glimmers of hope for a much better future .. The dark gloom is just starting to break, and its nice people like you that have been a major help thus far..
There's stuff in the pipeline too... I am very anxious to find out the results of the Neramexaine trials that have been concluded.. Maybe Tham knows something.. He's one of the sharper knives in the drawer... Suera, God bless you and yours..... bob
3 for 3- 2 for 2- 1 for one...
just finished my first day of 3 for 3.. Minor headaches, might be a side effect, and mild insomnia, but i did sleep well last night after 1//2 mg of xanax ER,.. i have taken pred before without major problems, and if it helps me hear better, I will take it every few months or so in the future, depending on what happens this time.. Right now, my hearing is improved , but wasn't that horrible anyway.

My ENT shook his head when the audiologist report showed sever hearing loss, but my word recognition was 96%.. I thinks all of this "severe" loss is compared to a 20 year old with great ears. At 57 my ears have had a lot of miles on them, and i have no trouble talking on the phone, or talking anywhere.
Yeah I am losing the high s sound compared to truly good ears, but i have lived a long time, and am happy I hear as well as i do...
I'll keep everyone posted on how the pred treatment goes in a week or so, when I am done... bob

Also, how long after your hearing loss did you start up on them?
No side effects I can feel.
Unfortunately, the effect was only temporary for me... my hearing is back to where it was, but its still not al that bad.. Close to normal in the low ranges, but drops down pretty heavily in the upper ranges. I think it is called "ski slope" loss because of the way the audiogram looks,, bob

Honestly, i was only given 5 pills for 5 days, but today i told the doctor i would not leave without another 10 days, so he gave it to me. I think he was going to anyhow.
BUT that being said, here's everything I know: about how it works:
- something's screwy with our ear nerve.
- every hurt a nerve in your leg, back, etc? takes a LOOOONG time to heal... much longer than a muscle or a bruise, and if you don't let it rest, it takes even longer
- but it can always heal more, thank god our bodies do that even if shabbily at times, the nature of healthy cell-division is healing
- the predisone helps the 'damaged' (i like to think of it as a pinched nerve) nerve become less inflamed, or basically less pinched.
- No I don't think it's ever too late. A lot depends probably on genetics, your age, your health, your LUCK, but personally non side-effects, i'd take them for he next 4 years if i could get them, it's the only actual medicine i read and saw on tons of youtubes that has a consistently curing effect.
