I read a book, "Tortured by Sound," the lady in the book got screeching tinnitus and hyper hearing - such as hearing a pin drop -in the book she describes hearing a tiny alarm clock ticking in the bottom of her suitcase and actually digging it up and pulling the battery to end her agony -
Maybe you should get the book and read how she got treated - I read it three times.
Amazingly, she traces her tinnitus to a car accident in which she suffered whip lash -
Your story intrigues me because it sounds so much like her -
My tinnitus came on when i lost half my high frequency hearing for no apparent reason -
So unless they turn my aids all the way up - I'm not going to hear no pin drop - ever again.
Best wishes on your journey to understanding your condition and how best to deal with it - I wish you weren't on the board - maybe it'll stop - we never know with this condition
BTW: Does your mother qualify for any type of hearing aide through disability or something? It's sad that people have to yell in her face for her to pick up on what's going on. That would be hard on any family.
When my aids are on the bedside table and I wake up - I don't hear anything except for the garbage trucks rambling down my street - their engines are in the low frequencies - my husband's voice from the bathroom telling me to get up - is a mumble - I hear his voice but the words are jumbled and unintelligible. I plug my hearing aids in and i hear the refrigerator kicking in - I hear the morning traffic on the main road behind the house and while sitting and drinking my coffee - I hear the birds outside.
I have high pitched tinnitus - I have a public journal - about getting it and getting treated.
Best wishes to you - that you and your mom - get the treatment necessary to recover and have a better life.
This is a very caring group like a family.
A big hug to you,
Kasandra
If you have an Mp3 player, try masking most of your sounds with music as you go about your day and esp at night. You probably already are keeping noises on around your home like fans, TV, etc. You can also get sound machines to make white noise, waves, etc.
You can use the search box at the top of this Discussion board to search any topic you are interested in, to see what people on here have said about it. There are a lot of smart and helpful people on here! : )

MandieGrace, I have gone to the chiro many times, but I am not sure if manipulating my neck doesn't make it worse. I didn't notice the tinnitus at first after the accident, but only after multiple neck adjustments did I say wow the ringing, where did that come from? But, I have those days that I can hardly pick up my head and I have no alternative but to go running to his office for a manipulation.
Mom will be 88 years young, and I bought her a hummingbird to see how she'd like it. Her first response was that she could herself breathe. She hates any type of hearing aids, but does enjoy her phone with the amplification for the hearing impaired. I had convinced her to go and get tested, but unfortunately they tried to sell her 2 hearing aids for six or eight thousand dollars. She was outraged and walked away. I suggested she buy just one, but she said absolutely NO! She tells me she can hear good enough, God bless her little heart.
Shirley, I only have TMJ at the dentist office, whom I don't bother to see him anymore as he only makes things worse. I don't think after you pay $2500 for a root canal and a crown that six months later while out for a nice steak dinner you should be holding that tooth in your hand at the first bite.
McMurdo it's a great idea an MP3 player as the thought never occurred to me. Thanks for the tip!
Easy2, had my car accident 6 years ago and I didn't notice it at first. Then I began to think it was from the television giving off the high pitch hissing sound. Until finally I realized it was my hearing
Suera, I have enough sleeping medications to put the entire state of Florida to sleep ... except me. The most I can expect from the meds is three or four hours, but I always wake up from pain. Tried amtriptyline, but it made me feel life wasn't worth living ... so being suicidal from the meds is not a good exchange for sleep.
Once again, thank you all. Have a Joyful, Happy and Healthy Holiday Season filled with love. Alicia
God bless,
Sandy
After 2 yrs with T to the point that initially I thought my life would be horrible I have now come to the point of acceptance of my little friend even when its at its worst. After purchasing a new home and with added responsibilities at work the T has taken a back burner and usually is not an issue like it use to be. I still take xanax a few times a day (.5 mg) to make my brain not be concerned as much about it.I think most in the group will agree that to get beyond the fear of this condition you need to keep occupied and realize that others in this world have a much heavier burden to carry other than a little head noise. Happy Holidays !
