I'm new here and just starting to read posts. I have had a problem with my ears since a MVA last December. I was DX. with vestibular concussion.
I wanted to tell you that my symptoms include "ear fullness".
How long have you had T? Mine has changed. I think I have whiplash induced somatic T. I have had this thing I call "robot ear" when I listen, everything sounds broken up or distorted. It's transient. Is your echo constant? Do you think you could have a wax buildup?
My mom used to hear whooshing when she laid down on her one ear. We thought it was her blood pressure. Now I read that hearing whooshing in your ears can be from the blood pulsing inside your ear. Do you know what your BP reading is?
I hope you feel better. In my experience, this can change from day to day. Hang in there.
Hugs
SummerJ
I've had T for at least 10 years. Usually the noise I hear is a high-pitched whistle in both ears.
Now in my left ear there's a whooshing sound -- it sounds like a wind blowing in my ear. The fullness/echo is getting progressively worse. It started a month ago as just a feeling that my ear was plugged up, and now it's distorting my hearing and causing a much worse T in my left ear. The whooshing sound isn't my heartbeat. I hear that, too, if I lay a certain way.
My doctor has checked and can't see wax or fluid in my ear. She said it's clear all the way to the eardrum. She checked my hearing and my eardrum response yesterday, and both were fine. When my T first started, my hearing test was way above normal. The ENT was really impressed at how well I can hear.
I feel pretty normal when I first get up in the morning. As soon as I hear any noise, the symptoms start. Yesterday I was in a room full of people who where talking, and it sounded like I had a buzz saw going in my head. It was soon after that the echo started.
My doc has referred me to both an ENT and an TMJ doctor. I hope one of them can find an answer.
Thanks for the prayers and information. I'm so glad this site is here!
What you are discribing has happened to me before. It usally is your sinusis that have caused that blocked up and echo feeling. I actually called my ENT and he said to use Sudfied and that it could take a little time. So please try not to worry.
And Welcome Summer, It is nice to have you with us. This is a very wonderful group which will give you much support.
A big hug to you both,
Sandy.
All I can do at the moment is hope the ENT specialist can get me in soon.
You sound a lot like me. I have been diagnosed with 'hyperacusis' - it's sound induced. I was going to post all of my sxs but to brief, I wake up fine too. But by the time I go to bed my ears are ringing off the hook. We had central air installed in 08 - in the attic. I didn't hear it until after the accident. Now - I beg to NOT turn it on. I hear the high pitch of the air handler motor so loud that it's piercing at times, and I get ear pain. No one else hears it. I have super ears now. It's awful.
The strange thing is that some days I'm okay. This is a result of the MVA, so my insurance company sent me for an Independent Medical by their doctor who concurred with my injuries, but went a step further to say I am predisposed to this condition - and the accident set it off.
He says it's my central nervous system that sometimes misfires causing either occular migraines and now this.
I'm a bundle of "wreck" between migraines, T, hyperacusis, tachycardia - and he said all of this is my CNS. He says that at times I'm short on seratonin, which sets this stuff off.
Not sure I believe all of this but I do know neck spasms caused my right ear problem, which is different than my left.
I won't go on here. I'll post all of my sxs later.
When are you seeing the ENT?
I had the back to back appts. too - first testing then the doctor.
My ears checked out okay. That's when he said it was all accident related. But it's changed so much, I haven't updated him on all of it.
My ears do a lot of strange things from hissing to ringing to screeching - rumbling - I feel the fluid inside but it's not ear wax.
I'm pretty okay in the morning but during the day, it builds. Some days I'm fine and think - ahhh it's gone! but in a day or two it's back.
I have the wooshing in my ear ( my right) and high pitch ringing in both and sometimes I hear things that aren't there.
My promble isn't T but I have intracranial hypertention. Its one of the many symptons.
I've had the wooshing in my ear off and on for 2 years told many doctors and almost all of them brush me off saying its nothing but maybe I was just seeing the wrong ones.
But really thing of any changes you have had so much effects our hearing and we don't always take note
I have the same thing and you're the first person I've come across who has described the same problem. So, while I'm not glad that someone else is going through it, it is good to have someone to talk to who will understand.
Mine started abruptly when I lost my hearing in one ear, overnight, in March. It's called Sudden Deafness. My ear felt blocked, developed tinnitus (at first high pitched, then the whoosh, which is a lot better), hyperacusis and the ringy-echo thing you describe. I'm a singer and this has made it impossible to do music. I took a 2 week course of Prednisone, as well as injections into the ear (3). Plus 2 months of acupuncture. I have to say that the only thing that has helped, a bit, is time. The hyperacusis has improved to the point that I've been able to travel, go to the theater and be in noisy environments; when this started I could barely go out of the house without headphones or earplugs. The ringy echo (I call it the 'shadow-sound') has diminished some but not enough for singing to be comfortable. I've seen specialists and was going to try hearing aids but since this has had some slow improvement, have decided to wait it out. The 'blocked' feeling is better at times. The whoosh is often not noticeable.
What I would like to find is someone who UNDERSTANDS the condition, which seems to be related to how sound is processed inside the bones of the face around the ears (that's my guess anyway). I welcome any input you can give and any information you turn up.
Best,
Kat
Kat: I don't think I've lost my hearing in that ear (my PCP's tests were normal). I think "ringy-echo" is a pretty good description of what I'm hearing in my left ear. It is the symptom that scares me the most. It distorts what's coming in -- flattens it. I'm so sorry you can't sing any longer. So far, this hasn't caused me to lose anything except my sanity.
I will definitely let you know if I find out anything. I know medicine is a very inexact science, but I have a pretty good group of doctors (U.C. Davis). I have confidence that if there is an answer to be found, they will find it.
When I first wake up in the morning, my ears feel mostly normal. As soon as I start hearing noises, all the symptoms return. After I have been exposed to sound for a while, the roaring in my ear returns. Last night's roar was worse than tonight has been so far. Last night's roar started after I watched TV for an hour.
Last night I talked to my husband on the phone with the phone to my left ear. I thought we had a really bad connection. He sounded really far away and tinny. Then I moved the phone to my right ear. He was coming in crystal clear. That really scared me.
've been researching everything I can find. I'm hopeful this is temporary.
Just a theory, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your ent about it. I have been to two different ents for my tinnitus. They were both very good listeners, and prescribed me lots of pills, but nothing worked. Good luck to you and your treatment.
The research I've been doing indicates distorted hearing is caused by nerve damage in the ears. I haven't suffered any injury to my ears. I don't remember having been exposed to excessive noise.
All I can do now is wait for the appointment and hope and pray for the best.
