I have taken Amitriptyline for several weeks. I do not know that I can tell it has increased it. Although I discontinued it because my ears have been pretty high lately and I dont want to be on anything I dont have to be. I was on it for possible migraines but it was determined they aren't migraines and I used it to help with sleep with the permission of the doc who prescribed it. I decided to discontinue it. I think what is causing my ringing is aspirin, that I have to take until I see my doctor to find out about other blood thinners, considering I had a mini stroke, so I have to stay on it, for now. Amitriptyline I felt always was good for lowering it. Judy

And Klonopin, they told me would not hurt my Tinnitus.

I have been taking Amtriptyline too. I don't think it has made my tinnitus worse. I was going to go off of it but when I did I went right back to not sleeping more than a few hours a night...which I had been doing for years even before T. Also, when I went off I could feel my RA pain in my hands. My doctor told me it's something I could be on for life, since it helps me both sleep and with some anti-inflammatory properties that helps with RA pain I am going to stay on this one. I'm on a low dose, only 25mg. so to me it is worth it. I don't know if it's doing anything for T or not but I do know for sure it is helping with sleep and RA pain.

Have been taking Elavil(Amitriptyline)for over 11 years now and on a daily basis. It helps with sleep and in my case it has not made my tinnitus worse.

Ok then. I am now convinced, that the Elavil is not the one that is spiking my Tinnitus.

How long do your spikes last?

I am doing electrical stimulation. So for several days my tinnitus has been lowered.

When I go to bed, I take my 50 mg of elavil, and 6 mg of melatonin

That is when my T seems to go up, and seems to last throughout the night.

But before my T got lowered from the electrical stimulation therapy I am now doing . I never had any spikes, because my T, would be exactly the same, after I took my meds.

Only thing I have found out with Klonopin is that you need to do a slow taper if anyone should get off of it. You can develop dependence and tolerance to it. It has been known to cause tinnitus when withdrawing from it. I am currently on .25 mg and tapering off. This is half of a 5 mg. I cut the half into 4 pcs. and am taking 3 pcs for 2 weeks, 2 pcs. for 2 weeks, and then 1 pc. for 2 weeks as to avoid any withdrawal symptoms. I did speak with my doctor and pharmacist about this as well. Dont attempt a dose reduction without their knowledge. It has not increased my tinnitus though. I got off my Amitriptyline as well last month due to having to allergy test (it has a histamine effect so you cant take it 3 wks. before you test). So now I only take 3/4 of a .25 mg tablet. First night, slept some not great, next day tired. Next night slept much better but no REM sleep, then last night slept good and had REM sleep so in my opinion I think it affects people differently in that if you take a higher dose for longer periods its harder to come off of. Klonopin definitely helps with anxiety, Amitriptyline for sleep. Both are useful. With tinnitus I can hardly blame anyone for being on whatever pill they need because it can be more than difficult some days to deal with it. Best Wishes! Judy
