dgn.. I too made this mistake.. The widex aids are really good, but really all they did is help me hear more crickets and sparrows... Most of my loss is above 2 K,, if anyone thinks 2 K is a LOW frequency, a mosquito buzz is 1K,, So reallr DGN s right.. If you are hearing pretty well, the Widex "masker" is useless, and is really a joke.. When my T is going strong,[90% of the time], the widex white noise could NOT even be heard.. I am lucky I bought my set used for $1,200, and had them programmed for me.. I also have a set of Siemens 701 Life aids w /maskers and a set of Resound Live 9 TS [Tinnitus Solution] aids with maskers.. The white noise in both those aids is much better than the Widex, although the aids are not quite as good... Real tinnitus maskers are the way to go.... Thats probably next for me...bob

These are professioanl maskers, so they can be on the costly side.

Sue.. They are white noise noise generators.. So if we understand that white noise is a combination of ALL frequencies we are capable of hearing with the human ear, yes those frequencies would be there/... However, remember, we are not kids.. Even some people with really good hearing can't hear at the 12-14 k frequency.. Those ranges drop off quickly as we age, and we never even know it.. There simply is NOT too much to hear in those frequencies...Remember what i said,, A mosquito thats whining in your ear when you are trying to sleep is at 1000 Hz..
How often do we hear things much higher than that?
Most human voice is in the 60-275 Hz range, with some consonant sounds going to perhaps 3 K,,,
You can have good hearing in all respects in your everyday life, yet be deaf at say 7 k or above... So even if a masker has 12-14 K in its broadband spectrum, if you cannot hear those frequencies, they will do you no good...
Its really ironic.. I cannot hear above about 12 K... I know this because I have listened to those frequencies online, and heard NOTHING.. Yet everyone around me was SCREAMING for me to shut it off...
So even though there is practically nothing to hear at 12-14 K in daily life, when you lose those frequencies, your brain rewards you with tinnitus at those ultra high frequencies.. How can the brain want to hear sounds it never gets anyway, and send out signals looking for them???? I just don't get it..
Anyway Sue, yes if you CAN hear at those frequencies, they should be in the white noise frequency spectrum of a good masker, but I would inquire first from the manufacturer...

Thank you both. Bob, I have lost my hearing in the 12-14KHZ frequencies which is why my tinnitus is at that level, from what I'm told and it does make sense. My brain supplies the fequency I lost (thanks-NOT!) and because that frequency is not heard in daily life all audiologists I've gone to have told me that for that very reason no masker will touch those frequencies. I will call Resound as that's the only company I haven't touched base with, all the others said no. I really appreciate you guys:)

Sue.. As I said those frequencies are probably within the broadband spectrum in little bits, but they won't do you any good... Actually a LOT of people can't hear those frequencies after about 35-40 years old, even with pretty good hearing.. Those frequencies start to fade early in life actually.. For most people before 30 or so.. thats why most audios don't even test them.. Why some people can be almost deaf and have NO tinnitus, and others like you and me can still hear pretty good except at ultra high frequencies, and have terrible T I just don't understand.
In any case, before you buy maskers, I would get an MP3 player for about $35, with some good ear buds, Download some white noise, pink noise, rain sounds, waterfalls etc... If that doesn't help mask your t some, I doubt maskers will help much.... bob

Thanks Bob. I do have an ipod and listen to the last track of Moses Lang as that is the only track that masks my T and it's a mixture of white noise in the 10khz-14khz range. The rest of the CD is white noise below that level and those tracks do nothing for me except drive me as batty as my T.

Thank you so much for the comments on Windex (Zen). I really cannot afford to waist anymore money and have additional dissapointment. As for the frequencies you are talking about, I have been going for help at a rehap center who has tested the frequency of my T at two levels. I have three. I have not had the 3rd frequency since I have been going to the center, so the audiologist only tested me when it was medium high and very low to me. She never even told me my frequency levels. I only know that I have had my hearing (not the T but hearing) tested twice in 2 years. It has not changed. I have very little hearing loss according the audiologists, actually I hear exceptionally well for a person my age. I have my first report, but I will have ask about frequency. I am going to get an appointment for consultation about the Zen and will now be able to talk about other things. I read about Zen on the internet. I am correct that my understanding is they make noise and replace the T noise (or not). The audiologist was not at the centre today. I wanted to talk about my findings on the internet. I saw the pshycologist and she thinks that Zen is Tennitus Retraining Thearpy. That is not the impression I got from the internet. I have to read your messages a bit more and try and understand about the frequency issues, and I will get back with a few more questions. Hope you guys don't mind helping me out before I go for the consultation. I want to go prepared and I want to ask my audiologist about frequency. Thanks all again. Very much appreciated.

If your hearing is GOOD, why do you want hearing aids???. Thats what the widex is ...a good hearing aid with a LOUSY "masking" device.. You would be way better off getting good tinnitus maskers.... bob

I believe Zen refers to the masking that can be programmed into the Widex hearing aids.

Zen is muscial tones, with the white noise running underneath it.

The Zen Tones can relax you, but does nothing for your T.

They didn't relax me much.. Annoyed would be the more appropriate term.. A much much better and more relaxing idea is an MP3 player or Ipod with music you enjoy... Simply no comparison.. Get Widez aids if you need them to hear high frequencies better.. If you don't, why waste the money?.. An MP3 player can have any sounds or music you want and is 1/100 the cost of the widex aids

Yes a good tinnitus masker if matched correctly to your T, can be a great benefit.

Find and good audiologist, that knows about Tinnitus.

What I have read is that your not suppose be over powered by the white noise when doing TRT. Just enough to be heard by the brain. What is 4 out of ten mean???? Jon
