I think most doctors prefer Klonopin because it doesnt have the feel good high like the others. I took it for several months.

Do you still take it.

I took Xanax not because of anxiety but because it helped in reducing the volume of the tinnitus. However, after about 4-6 weeks the volume started returning and the Xanax began wearing off. I refused to up the dose because at 1.5 mg I was a complete zombie. Almost lost my marriage and my job. It took from July 2010 to March 2011 to wean myself off and I went through very bad withdrawal symptoms, some of which are still with me.

Benzos are complete poison to me. If you are going to be on them please do not stay on longer than 2-4 weeks. These drugs are not meant to be used for long periods of time.

I have tried all but Xanax. I take a very small amount of Klono with Gabapentin each day because it lowers the volume the most for me (on most days).

I take 1/2 a Klonopin and 10 mg Amitriptyline at night. The Klonopin is for anxiety and the Amitriptyline is for migraine prevention. It helps me sleep. My T is more tolerable and I have more good days. So far no prob.

I have also heard if you take Klonopin that the withdrawal from Klonopin after long term us can actually cause tinnitus upon withdrawal.

If you already have tinnitus, what more can the klonopin do, to ,make it worse.

Yes, going off any benzo (not just Klono) can make T worse, but it eventually will settle back down, at least that is what I am told by my audiologist at Callier Tinnitus Center. Some antidepressants will do this--cause your T to spike at first, then it will settle back down after awhile. Like my audio says, "T hates change!" lol.

Benzos actually can cause temporary T in some people (like aspirin can), but in T sufferers it can lower it (while you are on it). I asked a doctor friend about this once, and he said it is just one of those weird things medicine doesn't understand regarding some drugs in that they should seem to make things worse, but in fact they do quite the opposite for certain conditions. He named a few other drugs that do the same thing for other illnesses (I forget them now), but I guess benzos helping to lower T volume for some is one of those "unexplainable" things.

I take zoloft, neurontin, and valium in small quantities..It keeps me sane .

I had very mild tinnitus for over 15 years I guess due to a hearing loss. I habituated to it very easily. I was on tranxene (another benzo) for sleep about 10 years. I went off of it too quickly and my tinnitus spiked and a year after it's still loud and I haven't habituated. If you take benzos for an extended period be VERY CAREFUL and go off of them VERY SLOWLY even if it takes 6 months to a year. Also expect other withdrawal symptoms.

I totally agree with animalove regarding benzos. They really aren't for long term use and do taper off of them very slowly. My tinnitus spiked after coming off of Xanax and it actually has done some weird things. Now not only am I enduring tinnitus on a daily basis I also have withdrawal symptoms from coming off of the Xanax that haven't gone away yet. People think that being on .25 mg or .50 mg is a low enough amount to come off of. Not necessarily. If you've been on this dose for months or years you need to taper off slowly or you may experience some wicked withdrawal symptoms.
