noise canceling headphone experiments for tinnitus? Noise canceling headphones take external sound waves, invert them, so that a flat sound wave results. Hence no sound.
While our noise is internal, has anyone ever tried to combat tinnitus with sound waves? An exactly tuned pitch should, in theory, cause whatever is causing the sound in our heads to cancel out, leaving us in blissful silence. This should help me, in theory, because I hear a continuous high pitched tone...I could even identify the note if I heard it played. It might be much more complicated for those who hear static or roaring sounds.

I also remember a theory called "industrial noise cancellation"??? Again, never heard of any real success in this area.

There is absolutely research being done using precisely the idea and concept you've described. It's tinnitus suppression. In fact, JohnK posted a link to the ATA site where a Dr. freely provided a 30 second MP3 that was proven tohelp some people. He was experimenting with patients listening to sounds that simulated the pitch of their own tinnitus and in many cases left the patient tinnitus free for one hour or one day, etc, after treatment.
