I also remember a theory called "industrial noise cancellation"??? Again, never heard of any real success in this area.

There is absolutely research being done using precisely the idea and concept you've described. It's tinnitus suppression. In fact, JohnK posted a link to the ATA site where a Dr. freely provided a 30 second MP3 that was proven tohelp some people. He was experimenting with patients listening to sounds that simulated the pitch of their own tinnitus and in many cases left the patient tinnitus free for one hour or one day, etc, after treatment.
