At the moment, my plans are to undergo Radioiodine Ablation therapy in a few years after I have my last kid (I have two, but want a couple more).

In the mean time my doctors, both who actively do research in the field of Thyroid Cancer treatments, have prescribed thyroid hormone therapy. This therapy involves taking high doses of thyroid hormone in order to suppress TSH levels, which in turn suppresses the growth of cancer (in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer).

My Tg levels have been steady at 3.5 for over two years. The steady levels indicate that my thyroid cancer is not growing.

wow that is amazing that you would wait. I am 34 and want to have more children. I have one child and have had iodine radiation 131 and doctors say it is fine to have children, so why wait? What type of thyroid cancer do you have and have you had surgery to remove your thyroid? Tricia

It seems to have worked for me. Once I had the thyroid removed I had the 131 iodine treatment. I must admit I have only had one blood test since 12/06 and only remember to take my pill about 80% of the time.

I had the radioiodine therapy at 17 and I've had 7 children, my first at 19 and everyone is fine.

Successful ablation. But since I may be a carrier for MTC, as my Mom is believed to have pap or follicular and it later became MTC, I think they should have given me the option of second surgery first, especially where the remenant was so large. RAI does not effect MTC. Nuc med docs follow patience who have pap or follicular and I think are less likely to take into consideration MTC since they don't see it as much as other docs.
I had swelling on my vocal chords for a day but felt good otherwise.
Afterwards I ACHED like crazy. So much so I asked for scans and xrays, which thankfully ruled out other problems.

I underwent Iodine Radiation therapy, but I have a metasitisis and a type of folicular carcinoma that is very agressive, although slow growing. It is not as likely to respond to RAI, but they are trying to get it to work by using extra large doses.
My Tg levels came back as a 21, but we have to wait until at least October to do more scans because the swelling is so high that all the scans will show is increased metabolic activity in the swollen parts.
TIP: My doc failed to tell me about the low iodine diet to use before RAI - you can read about it on the ThyCa.org website. It is much more likely to work if you do this for 2 weeks prior to your treatment. it is hard to stick to, but 2 weeks compared to your life is nothing. Luckily, my mom read about it and told me to do it!
