Hi everyone, In 1998 I had a goiter on my thyroid and was hyperactive, I was given beta blockers and went through radioactive iodine treatment which left my thyroid hypo. I have been on levothyroxine ever since. I just recently had a MRI of my brain and spinal cord, they found four lesions on my brain but none on my spine, but they did notice what they called fluid on my thyroid when they did the cervical MRI. I decided to get a ultrasound of my thyroid and they found several small nodules on my left side and one 2cm nodule on my right. The doctor wants me to get a biopsy. For some reason I'm so terrified to get this done, can't I just go and get my whole thyroid removed since I have had trouble with it for years? I'm scared of this whole thing. The timing is also horrible because I may have MS and fibromyalgia, this is all too overwhelming, I'm kind of a wimp, so this is tough for me. Any advice would be great. I am so sorry this has come into your life. I too have fibromyalgia, but not MS.

Anyway, I am not much help, as I am new to all this. I have a nodule that I will have taken out soon. I see the surgeon tomorrow to set a date.

I can see why you would just want to get the thing removed, and then biopsied, if I read your post right. That is what I expect to happen to mine. Can you tell the surgeon that is what you want to be done? I'm pretty sure that for some nodules, they just want to watch them.

Oh, first they should do a nuclear scan to find out if they are hot or cold. If cold, I believe they need to be removed. As I said, I'm new at this, so don't take my word for it. Please keep us updated. Hugs and best wishes to you.

Waiting is tough. I knew I had a nodule about two months ago, after a horse accident. I ended up having to bring it to my doctor's attention. Later I changed doctors. I see the surgeon tomorrow for a surgery date and while I do not look forward to surgery, I sure want to have it over with.

I know there are different approaches to cancer. Were you ever diagnosed with cancer? I'm glad you are under a doctor's care and came to this site. What are they saying about the brain lesions? What kind of doctor are you seeing? Hope you don't mind all the questions.

gethealthy, I have never had cancer before. My neurologist said to repeat the MRI of the brain in 6-12 months. It has been about 7 months, so I'm about to do that again, I guess if they find new lesions, then I most likely have MS. I guess to get an MS diagnosis you have to have lesions in two separate areas at two separate times. I don't mind the questions. I'm seeing my PC, a Neurologist and a Rheumatologist right now. Oh, and about to go to a Podiatrist for really bad Plantar Fasciitis lol...when it rains it pours.

So you had radioactive iodine treatment, but they never said you had cancer? I'm a little confused about that. And so the lesions in our brain might be MS? No one has suggested they might be cancer? I mean, that is good if not cancer, but I also know MS is no fun. Wow. You are going through a lot.

With your new nodules, I can understand why you want the whole thyroid out. Have you told your doctor you just want to have it removed? I hope you get some answers real soon. Keep us posted and hugs!

Hi, The reason I had radioactive iodine is to get rid of the goiter on my thyroid. The lesions in my brain were not from cancer. I do have my 2nd brain MRI tomorrow, so if it shows new lesions then I will probably get the diagnosis of MS. The doctor called me today and said that they referred me to a hospital near me to have the biopsy, I will make sure I update them on my history with my thyroid and maybe I can get them to agree just to take the damn thing out. Its horrible because I can feel it when I swallow. (((hugs)))

Okay. There is sure a lot I don't know. I hope they remove the whole thyroid. It makes sense to me and I hope you don't have MS, but then what would the alternative be? Glad it is not cancer.

Had my MRI done on the brain again and good news, my old lesions are still there but not active and they found no new ones. woohoo, I get another MRI in one year or sooner if I have any major symptoms. (((hugs)))
