How Trump Crippled the Affordable Care Insurance

In 2017, the Trump administration destabilized the ACA health insurance market by threatening to renege on premium support and reinsurance payments. This sabotage of the ACA provides a demonstration of how a free market, i.e., one without federal regulation and subsidy, operates. We witnessed an increasing number of firms leaving some markets; those that remain are raising their premiums (some increases are reputed to be in excess of 200%). This is a death spiral. As the market model would predict, the exodus of firms is greatest in poorer areas and areas with older populations.

You are correct. The people who would benefit most from the ACA happen to represent Trump's core supporters. (Kentucky for example). Even I, who live in California, didn't even qualify for MediCal until the ACA passed, and I was UNEMPLOYED at the time! Right now I have a great plan through the exchange and my premium is less than half what I would be paying if I bought a plan through my employer. For all that people whine about the ACA, it helps poor people. It's not perfect, and I understand it has limited the choices of the (rapidly diminishing) middle class, but my bias is that I am poor and I would still have fibroids and a hernia (among other medical issues) if not for the ACA.

I got laid off at age 63, so I went on Social Security, and I was glad that I could get ACA until Medicare kicked in when I turned 65. . Medicare costs me more than the ACA did, but it's a lot less than I was paying through my employer's plan. I went off the ACA plan 6 months before I was eligible for Medicare because my premium tripled.
