This is a group where we are trying to raise awareness of this chronic disease. This disease effects nearly 20% of the population...and is a very serious illness that should not be taken lightly.
Hey guys, I just turned 18 this month and I had a minor case of hydrocephalus that left me with a large skull. Its made my life hell and even though I deal with it I'm faced with anxiety in every single social situation I'm in.
Honestly, my biggest fear is that when I'm chilling with friends the words 'big head' or 'head' or something comes on T.V. Anyone else have this type of anxiety? It makes me want to just go to sleep all day. At about 6th grade when 'looks' started becoming important my grades drastically fell from there on out. (Yes, I have been excepted to some major universities though so I haven't completely thrown away my life.) I feel like I can't concentrate because I'm always on high-alert thinking about a situation that is going to make me feel awkward.
Are there any doctors who would actually be willing to operate on my skull and reconstruct it to a normal size? I've seen one but he refused to do anything because other than my large skull, I'm perfectly healthy.. I was 16 when I saw him and I haven't cried since I was very young... but that day was the saddest day of my life.
Seriously, any insight on doctors who can help me with this would be amazing.
I've never made a post like this anywhere, nor have I told my closest friends/family what's going on really.
You need to look at your situation differently; Like what is wrong with all those people with small heads?
I know it is hard to be different, I was told I had Hydrocephalus last January it has left me disabled but no one can see my disability, so many think I am faking it. Even my wife at times will not believe me when I am hurting. She has said that the doctors have said they fixed you so why are you still acting like your in pain. The people at my work think I am just saying Im in pain so I dont have to work. I feel I need to cut a limb off to prove Im disabled. So from one of those people in the world with a small head. Chin up buddy, we could be worse off. Have a great day! :<)
I totally understand. Even though my Hydro is not really visible the chair I am in is. It makes me so uncomfortable to have people stare at me. If it get to bad I excuse my self until I can handle things and refocus on the group I am in
hey, i'm 18 as well. and i do feel anxious some times. like changing in front of people or wearing a bathing suit. i think oh god! the scar on my stomach is so noticable! so i think the anxiety is somewhat normal. but it can also be overcome. like grizz1y said, just get your mind to think that everyone else is weird. :)
All I want to say Jack...is the other two replies are great advice. We are not what we LOOK like...we are the person, spirit, inside. If the subject comes up....if the question is ask...why is your head so large....tell them....or just say because I have a really large brain...not tiny like yours....lol.?
I realize that at your age it can be very very difficult...and it is painful at times when people don't accept us just for whom we are....we can't change others....so we have to change ourselves....don't deny yourself the joy of being social.....just because your a tiny bit different....eveyone has problems...we might not be able to SEE them....but there ..there, even if it is with their attitude.....ya know?
My heart goes out to you....wish I could just give you a hug and tell you ...it's all gunna be okay....that's too easy for me....cause this is your life, and your discomfort....I really feel you NEED someone to talk to ...to vent to, to cry with...there is NOTHING wrong with allowing the tears to flow....it's grief....let it go....don't hold it in....if you don't feel comfortable talking to a family member....then find a counsler.....
There are alot of really understanding individuals on this site....ya know? Maybe venting here could be helpful to you.....just dont' deny yourself.......because you "feel" different.....LOVE YOURSELF FOR YOUR DIFFERENCE! YOU are just as worthy and just as beautiful as any other person!
