HOUSTON—A 23-year-old is accused of viciously beating her little sister over a bag of Cheetos.
Deby Mejia reportedly told investigators she resents her 10-year-old sister for being born and never loved her.
Aside from the troubling words in documents, this case has also uncovered a pattern of alleged physical abuse. Investigators say Mejia might not have wanted to raise her 10-year-old sister.
According to documents, Mejia claims she was forced into that role when she was just a teenager. She says that’s when their mother was deported to Honduras in 2006.
“When she got mad at her, she would punish her not very good,” said one neighbor who didn’t want his name used.
This time documents say things got physical inside the apartment in the 9400 block of West Sam Houston Parkway. Mejia reportedly whipped the little girl with an extension cord and banged her head on the floor.
Mejia was allegedly enraged when she caught her sister eating a bag a Cheetos.
An upstairs neighbor says sadly punishment was not unusual.
“She put her outside kneeling on rice with a bucket of water on her head,” he added.
CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said there may have been a pattern of abuse. In fact, school counselors told CPS that the girl had come to school with injuries before.
“Apparently this was not a one-time incident. It was a common occurrence,” said Olguin.
According to Olguin, school counselors are saying that they have notified CPS in the past. Olguin says CPS has no record of that, and they also have no record of being notified by immigration officials.
“Had we received a report that a child was caring for a child, that a minor was caring for another minor, that would be something we would definitely get involved and work with ICE,” explained Olguin.
CPS is receiving conflicting reports as to how long Mejia had been parenting her sister. Mejia told police she has been caring for her for six years. Olguin said she told CPS she has been caring for her for only two years.
The little girl, who just turned 11 years old, is now in foster care. A custody hearing is set for November 13th.
Mejia is behind bars on $60,000 bail.

This article makes me mad and why! Why!, did the neighbors watch this abuse and not report it?!!!
I know there's a lot more of this going on than we can imagine.
It is sad. The total lack of empathy in society is amazing to me. I hope both children get the help they need.
