To some of you, therapy might sound a bit extreme and unneccesary. I've felt like this. refused to go to therapy because of a childhood trauma for over 3 years because I felt like therapy was for weak people and I did not need help. I had my first session and it was the best thing I have ever done. Without therapy I don't know what I would be today. I certainly wouldn't be as strong as I am today.
Therapy is a big step, but it is the biggest step in your healing process. I currently have EMDR therapy. In my opinion, this is the best therapy for rape victims.
You can only benefit from going to therapy. Admitting that I needed help and actually getting it has mad me so much stronger and it will do the same for you! I felt like I could not recover and that the rape would forever be in every aspect of my life. I can proudly say that it isn't anymore and it is all because I went to therapy.
Remember: even if you don't feel ready to go to therapy, it will probably be the best thing for you. By delaying you are only slowing down your healing process. Allow yourself to heal in the best and most effective way. The sooner you get help, the sooner you will feel better. I know I did :) What are your thoughts about this subject?
I've personally got reservations about EMDR therapy, because people don't really know how exactly EMDR works. I'm currently doing just plain old talk therapy, though with definitely an emphasis on trauma work. I dunno, I guess I just like talking things out and finding out the connection between things. I like diving into how my trauma affects my current relationships and all of that...?
That's great!
It's good that you're already going to therapy. My therapy is a combination of 'normal therapy' and EMDR therapy. I only get the EMDR whenever I had a really bad triggering. In The Netherlands, the EMDR therapy is more advanced than in the US. There were a lot of studies on the subject which could make you change your perspective about this subject but the studies are all in Dutch haha!
About the simply talking to your therapist: I swear by it. It makes me feel so much better. Before I found this site, she was the only one who knew that I was going through and actually knowing others that have had the same experience. It made me feel a bit alone but that feeling is completely gone since I found all of you!
