Can men have labor pains to get a better understanding of what women go through?

Men have hooked themselves up to a machine that creates the sensation of labor to see if they could handle the pain of childbirth.

It's the kind of pain, even when it's not exactly real, makes grown men cry.

As part of a stunt, the men were hooked up to a machine with electrodes stuck to their abdominals to simulate labor pains.

Just like the real thing, the cramping - or "contractions”, got stronger, longer, and closer together.

They say they did it so they could better empathize with women!

But not so fast, Dr. Ashton, ABC News senior medical contributor: "You can think of this as a very strong charlie horse. Is it as painful as labor? My opinion is that it isn't."

So just ‘how long’ could these two take the pain?

The average labor lasts between 12 and 14 hours, but these guys?

Well, they only lasted two!

I agree. I have been a Labor and Delivery Nurse for over 12 years now and have seen firsthand just how strong women can be throughout all of that pain. I also had 2 children naturally so know firsthand just how horrible the pain is. I don't believe that the experiment with the men comes anywhere close to what a woman goes through...if they could somehow simulate pain that is deep inside and radiates to your back where you think it will break in two-then maybe the experiment would be comparable. Just my opinion!

I am in agreement with you LJ, all of my labors were long!!! My DH gets kidney stones and I have always heard that is equal to a woman's labor pain. My ED has had both, she says honestly the kidney stones were the worse...but she felt that was because it came on as a shock. DH's sister has also had both and she said although "they are a bitch" she prefers a stone. (her words)

With that said however.... each & every time DH has a kidney stone, he is quickly given Demerol, as that is the only thing that works for him. When a woman goes into labor we are not "quickly" given anything...if at all, and as we know the pain gets more & more intense....and can last for hours on end... so I can understand how these men only lasted 2 hours....sorry guys!!!

Men are wimps when it comes to tolerating pain
.... but it's fun to watch them try! Hehehe !!

They only lasted 2 hours because it was optional. It's the next 12 hours that would be the real test.
We didn't get that option....and we persevered!

Labor wasn't too terribly bad.....it was the 9 months of puking and having the baby kick the crap outta my ribs and bladder!!!!!!
If a man truly wants to sympathize with what us women go through in child bearing........it'll start with a steady diet of crackers and 7up before their feet hit the ground.......and they still end up puking day and night!!!
Nine months later after hours or days of intense pain of a grizzly bear (sorry papa) ripping your guts out while you look on helplessly!!!!!
I say if they are going to do this experiment.....do it the whole 9 months!!!!!

Maybe so, but a lot of men have endured pain and torture during wars. I would venture there are different forms of pain which are more tolerable to one or the other, with psychological factors also a component. I never like to judge by the group. I take people one at a time. I believe the childbirth pain threshold does favor a woman over a man, hence the Q.E.D. ! :)

Actually----the labor pains and delivery are not fun for sure. My first was breach and I went for 18 hrs the second I had toxemia so was sick at the end big time. Women are created for childbirth and along with that our good Lord even created us with a physically larger heart to withstand the extra stress.

But in reality I have to agree with PPB --- everyone's pain level and tolerance is different. Personally as for myself, I can handle physical pain way better then emotional pain. I cannot deal with that and it really sends me off trying to understand and figure it out.

Pain is such a subjective experience and we all , men and women, have different pain levels and thresholds …. 12 hours of labour pains compared with years of estrangement ??? …….. I’ll take the labour pains any day!!

So true pain is very different for everyone and I for one could not even begin to image what it must be like on a battlefield. True Pippa nothing compares to the pain of estrangement, we just like to bug the guys whenever we can :-)
