Yes, I have an Inner Nerd within me! :-)

I resurrected a PC I built back in 2006 and it's now dedicated to SETI@HOME.

I pulled the MB tray, took all the components off, cleaned it off with a fine brush and can of dust off, re-assembled it, juiced it (OC'd CPU from 2.13 GHz to 3.29 GHz and RAM from 800 MHz to 940 MHz), benched it for stability and thermal tolerance and it's good to go!

I might update the video card because SETI@HOME also uses the GPU for its work units.

Ubuntu (/bntu/ uu-BUUN-too)[8][9] is a computer operating system based on the Debian Linux distribution and distributed as free and open source software, using its own desktop environment. It is named after the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu ("humanity towards others") or another translation would be: "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

It's actually a pretty cool OS from what I'm seeing. Think I'll have a lot of fun with it!

I use ubuntu on my computer at home and have for many years. Prior to that it was Debian, and before that RedHat back to 98. I'm old school, what can I say.
I got into it for graphical arts, because it runs so much faster than windows and the GIMP (Graphical Image Manipulation Program) is one of the best pieces of digital manipulation software out there.
I HATE photoshop. but that's mostly because I'm used to the GIMP and all it's glory and power.

I'm rambling. Aren't I?

One interesting thing I noticed on my SETI@HOME account. Same hardware, but Windows does better on floating point operations and ubuntu does better with LAN.

Windows XP Pro 32 Bit:

Measured floating point speed 2934.61 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 6261.21 million ops/sec
Average upload rate 34.48 KB/sec
Average download rate 362.44 KB/sec

ubuntu 32 Bit:

Measured floating point speed 1783.59 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 6226.93 million ops/sec
Average upload rate 45.21 KB/sec
Average download rate 2660.5 KB/sec

Whew, almost finished! Feel like I'm ready for a new career in infrastructure vs software!

I've done so many OS installs and swapping/installing hard drives and graphic cards the past two weeks! I'm just waiting for an additional 4GB of memory for my main machine and two 25 foot Cat6 patch cables and that's it!

Well... I _might_ upgrade a CPU just for grins and giggles! :-)

By the way, I installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit edition yesterday and really like it.
