I resurrected a PC I built back in 2006 and it's now dedicated to SETI@HOME.
I pulled the MB tray, took all the components off, cleaned it off with a fine brush and can of dust off, re-assembled it, juiced it (OC'd CPU from 2.13 GHz to 3.29 GHz and RAM from 800 MHz to 940 MHz), benched it for stability and thermal tolerance and it's good to go!
I might update the video card because SETI@HOME also uses the GPU for its work units.
Yup, it's processing signals received and stored from SETI and run from Berkley. They have a couple dozen other distributed processing projects.
I'm running an Intel C2D E6400 on an ASUS P5B Deluxe. Stock the CPU runs at an FSB frequency of 266 MHz and a multiplier of 8 for 2.13 GHz. I stepped the multiplier down to 7 and upped the FSB to 470, so my DDR2 RAM is running at 940 MHz. It's 800 MHz G.Skill with Micron D9 chips and I have the timings tight (4-4-4-10). More bandwidth. :-)
Running Prime95 torture test Small FFTs the temps for both cores barely breaks 50C and the Northbridge sits at 32C. I've got a big Thermalright SI128 heatsink with a whopping YS 120mm x 38mm fan that puts out something like 135 CFM. I've also got lots of good case airflow and a small fan mounted on the Northbridge and a Corsair fan cooler on my RAM.
I could run things faster (7x533 for 3.73 GHz), but I want to keep the voltages reasonable. It's not only the heat but excessive electromigration if I jack up the voltages too high. Both the C2D E6300 and E6400 are grate overlockers, and the ASUS P5B Deluxe is a great LGA775 Socket board. G.Skill also makes some really great RAM.
By the way, the new LGA 1155 socket boards and Intel I3, I5 and I7 Quad Core CPUS are smoking, even at stock speeds. And the new DDR3 RAM is amazing. But this system is old and I have a newer C2D system I built in 2008 based around the C2D E8400 3 GHz, G.Skill DDR3 1066 MHz RAM and ASUS P5Q Pro MB.
That one is running stock speeds and handles what I need to do and I just can't justify upgrading to a newer setup yet.
My main computer is a quad core. Just one of those paperback book sized mini boxes with only 2g of ram. It can bog down, but that is mostly because of the beta version of the hardware acceleration drivers for this particular no-name chipset.
Think it is a zotec z-box, running Ubuntu on a 60gig SSD. Pretty much bulletproof.
Next box I build will be an I7 Quad Core and I'll probably install Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Funnyyoushould bring that up Dave. I bought a Raedon HD 7770 for SETI@HOME GPU processing, whowever AMD stopped supporting OpenCL for Windows XP drivers early last year. The last one doesn't support my new graphics card, so...
I'm in the process of DL'ing ubuntu. That's my project for tonight and tomorrow. Gonna try that flavor of Linux and see how I like it. Frankly the Unity GUI looks okay, and the current LTS version (12.04) is being supported for 5 years, not the normal 3 years, through 2017. Ad the AMD driver for linux does support OpenCL, so my GPU should support SETI@HOME GPU processing.
Me personally I like to underclock things, to give better life expectancy to components and better thermal efficiency.
Sheesh, I can remember when front side bus was under 100mghz. WOW things have changed.
What is Seti@home? is that one of the "loaning CPU cycle" programs for curing cancer or mapping outer space or something?
