It's sad news for sure, but I don't get why New Jersey has the flags at half staff for him... isn't that usually a move reserved for deaths of state and federal dignitaries or mass tragedies within the state? I mean, no disrespect to Gandolfini or anything but he hardly qualifies as a dignitary for Jersey...

The character is loosely based on real-life New Jersey mobster Vincent "Vinny Ocean" Palermo (born 1944), SO I GUESS HE REPRESENTED A NJ ICON. TONY BECAME REAL TO US AS GANDOLFINI WEAVED HIS CRAFT.

He will be missed...also, I've seen flags flown at half-staff for things other than a government official or a mass tragedy, I think they're loosening up the 'rules' on what qualifies for that :)

Does anybody remember Gandolfini in "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts? Awesome and unexpected role, so different from Sopranos!

    I recently heard a great 2007 song the other day, "Falling Slowly" because it popped up in my newsfeed, accompanied by the sad news that the  male singer, Glen Hansard, just died in a motorcycle accident.  I learned that the song won an award and was featured in an indie movie called Once. I just watched it, and it's really good.  They made it in 3 weeks on a $100,000 budget. It's streaming on...
