Never thought of a "washer" in this light before..what a blessing!"Warshing Clothes Recipe" -- imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:this is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook -with spelling errors and all.
WARSHING CLOTHESBuild fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water. Sort things, make 3 piles1 pile white,1 pile colored,1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.Hang old rags on fence. Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down.Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.================================================
Paste this over your washer and dryer Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks.. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

Thank you God that I don't have to pass this kind of knowledge off to my children and future DIL! Can you imagine??? You have Three, Four or more kids and a husband and you have to wash clothes like this?
God bless those pioneer ladies and all that they went through to make a life for their families. ... And the military won't let a woman fight in combat--Sheesh! We are far more tougher than they can ever realize!

I have never romanticized about living in the old days...it is not for me and i know it! Sooo grateful for the modern appliances we have...I always thought about how great it was for me to have the dishes getting washed, the laundry dried, and me being in the shower at the same time!
He fills the bathtub, washes everything by hand and rather than wringing it he hangs it to drip over the tub then we air dry on racks and railings. Kinda primitive I know but I can't carry laundry out to a laundromat and he refuses to pay the price so he does it himself for all 4 of us. He's a good hardworking man - Monday it takes all day to do it all and still drying on Tuesday. I help with the folding and putting away cause I feel kinda guilty
I love old recipe books and all kinds of old books. I have a set of encyclopedias from about 1885, its funny to look things up and see what they thought.
They probably kept going and didn't even complain. I feel like such a wimp!
But, I do have to admit that I make my own liquid washing soap for clothes. I like the old recipes. They give a sense of purity and cleanliness and invigorating health.
