Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is any sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year. SIDS is responsible for roughly 50 deaths per 100,000 births in the US.

Has anyone ever done this? I was thinking it would be a good way to honor Austin and to raise money for SIDS. The only problem I'm having is with the SIDS info. cards that are supposed to be distributed to those who donate. Before I commit to organizing this fundraiser, I want to know ahead of time what information about SIDS I am signing up to promote. In other words, I don't want to be handing out cards that say "put your baby on his back to prevent SIDS." Austin died on his back.

I emailed the organization and asked to see a card before I sign up and I haven't heard back yet. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this.

I did it last year and raised almost $2,500. The cards that you hand out do have Back to Sleep info on them. It says there 3 things that are easy to remember and can significantly reduce an infant's risk of SIDS: Smoke free, back to sleep & bare crib. Mason had none of those risks either, so I completely understand where you are coming from. If you want I can scan the card and email it to you, I have an extra one here at work.

I am involved with another organization this year and we are planning a 5K walk/run in May, so I will not being doing it again, but I did enjoy doing this and it was just another way to raise SIDS awareness and honor our babies!

I had thought about doing this too, but decided against it. I don't want to promote Back to sleep any more than it already is either. I'm going to do Colin's day too and it's too close to that fundraiser to be asking people for donations. I think it's a great thing, but when will they stop just promoting Back to sleep? I would've rather been educated on the rebreathing factor and how it can NOT be prevented and how it's most likely in the brainstem!!! How about those factors??!!! Sorry, got me going!

Either way you decide to go, I would gladly send you a donation in honor of Austin!!!

I'm kinda with you all on this one... We raised money for St. Judes Children's Hospital after she passed... After hearing everyone's stories on here, the back to sleep campaign did seem to have helped very many of us.... and all of the SIDS organizations really push that...

I am so proud you see the same thing I do. All of the SIDS people we have talked to that would come to the fundraisers are wanting to hand out pamplets of putting children on their backs. Brooke was on her back with no blankets or anything. So I hate to hand this out when we all know that there is much more to it.

I know people who have done this, some have had good luck, others have not. They are really particular on their rules. I know at one time YOU had to pay up front for the package of information. I am very disenchanted by these SIDS orgs. I fundraise for the March of Dimes instead, I figure in ways they are the huge umbrella organization for it all...just my 2 cents.

I haven't heard of this but if you end up doing it we would definitely do a donation.
