A stroke is an acute neurologic injury where the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted, either by a clot in the artery or if the artery bursts. The brain perfused by that artery no longer receiving oxygen carried by the blood and dying with cessation of function from that part of the brain.

CEREBELLUM BLOOD CLOT/STROKE

My dad had a blood clot in his cerebellum and had surgery on July 13th. He is 73 and he had a hemoragic(sp) stroke while we had in the ER, which was lucky for him.
He is home and having a nurse,ot,pt and someone to bathe him every other day. Its alot of work for my mom daily.
We just dont know what to expect daily. He just sits in his chair or lays in bed.
Today I looked at him and cried because this is not the dad i know and dont know if he will ever get 1/2 back to where he was.

The bad part is he is diabetic and has nueropathy (cant feel hands or feet).

Believe it or not he's still dad. Don't treat him like a baby. Do lots of encouraging and help with therapy. Raise his arms and legs daily. Give him massages. Talk to him, not at him. He will definitely have depressed days because of his condition. Read to and treat him like you have all your life. Stay positive!

He very much is still your Dad. Look beyond the way he is now. It's so early in his recovery even at his age to think he will stay this way. Give him the same love and respect you used to. Believe me, he will know and appreciate you for doing so.

Its so hard sometimes. He is having trouble speaking, walking, eating,drinking, etc.... he is dizzy and throwing up. I spent 2 full days at his house to help my mom and its so hard.

looking into having home health come out a couple times a week to help her out, to give her a break to get out of the house.

Try not to get yourself down, I realize its a huge adjustment tough to see someone i'm sure you've admired all your life be in this position. However, all the things your mother, you, and your familiy are doing make a huge difference even in the slightest bit.

When I had my stroke the amount of help and support from family and friends meant the world to me; more than any OT/PT could do (even though that was my motivation to get back my mobility and life). It was knowing that support was there which made the difference. Keep pushing!!

Sorry to hear about your dad.

My husband also had a stroke and also suffered from neuropathy. Strangely, his neuropathy got better after the stroke. Though we still struggle with the stroke symptoms.

Google "Brunnstrom's Stages of Stroke Recovery" and you will find a lot of good information on what to expect in the coming months.

Also the National Stroke Association has a discussion forum for family members of stroke survivors at http://careliving.stroke.org that you and your mother may find helpful

Good luck and don't give up hope. The road to recovery is long after stroke.
