Ugh. I put in for time off next week cause my son's daycare is closed for the holiday the whole week, they do this each year. So I work next Tuesday/Wednesday so back on May 17th, I put in the request for time off. I have plenty of hours to be able to cover taking it off. Well today, my boss gives me the request back denied. DENIED? ARE YOU FN KIDDING ME? I gave him almost 2 months notice! Its not my fault you don't have coverage after 2 months notice. I have no choice, i have no child care next week. UGH!!! So needless to say I have been livid all day. He left for the day about an hour ago so I haven't yet asked him why it's denied or pled my case but if anything I think I'm calling out. I'm over this. My job sucks. He hates his job so I swear he does everything to make everyone else miserable. UGH. Just trying to calm down from still being so pissed off.

maybe it's a good thing he left early today...gives you time to cool off before you talk to him. fact is, you gave him adequate notice, you have the hours. unless he wants to baby-sit your son for a week, he needs to give you that time off.

Cool down and stay calm. Tomorrow cooly remind him that you requested this time off 2 months ago, due to the daycare closing that week. Tell him that if he won't approve it for vacation time, you will call in sick or use FMLA. (Assuming that your workplace is large enough to be covered by FMLA laws.) If he balks, go to HR and fill out the FMLA forms (if applicable.) Otherwise, he can fire you if you live in an at-will employment state and if you are not represented by a union or other placement or bargaining entity. Then you can file for unemployment benefits and look for work elsewhere. Eventually, it sounds like you are headed in a different direction anyway, since you can't change the work culture and it aggravates you too much. (If he doesn't fire you, you may start that job search anyway. There are some good jobs out there even in this economy.)

IF worse comes to worse and things aren't resolved by that time...try to go to work still, but bring your child with you. If he starts complaining about it, remind him that you DID give him 2 months notice and he denied it and this really is your only option. Two things can happen, he'll give ya a slap on the wrist but not fire you and walk away in a huff (maybe even w/threats of firing you) OR he'll fire you - means you can file for unemployment. It's just an idea and you by no means have to do this However, it would show that you are dedicated to work AND your child and it will show your boss, even YOU mean business.
