I have had some bad bosses. BAD BOSSES
I had a boss once who made me cry on my first full day of work, would frequently ride me until I past the point of frustration - including throwing a pen at him once. and this same boss told my male partner that he hated hiring males because they did not cry as easily as women. yeah.
I had a boss once who was in charge of a child's summer camp and who had s terrible temper, and I watched body check and slam employees against the wall... so I, being his secretary, ran the camp for him and rarely let anything get to him other than simple things such as signing a letter, and such, even though I had never run anything that big in my life and was only hired as the secreatry. He would therefore only scream at me when he found out I had handled things for him, but he didn't kill anyone, like I feared at the start of camp.
I once had a boss who was cheating on her husband by having sex with a guy at the office when it was closed, and would frequently tell me when she was in the office, so that she had an alliby when accused of cheating.
Bad bosses.
Now, I have worked many jobs. I have been a youth minister, an adventure director, a teacher, a mental health consultant, a therapist, and a behavior specialist. In all of these, I have been in charge of a great deal of responsibilty... people .... I have usualy been in the role of a supervisor and trainer..... I work well under stress, and am fairly intellegent.
So when we moved, I needed to be at home when the kids got on and off the bus because my husbands new job did not allow him to do either. I also was finishing out my old job in our old county, dealing with a court case, and moving things out of our old house, as well as setting up what we needed in our new house - bills, Drs, etc..... So I couldn't do the job I was leaving because I needed to be gone so much to do that job.... and I was collecting on vacation days owed to me from my old company, so I wasn't worried about getting a good paying job - just an income.
All considered, I started working at a local gas station/food service company called Sheetz. I work part time at night.... now that we have been here for a while, I have started working part time dong therapy as well but it will take time to build up a decent set of cases... so I continue to work part time at Sheetz overnight.
There is one head manager for the store - Mike Then there are 2 assistant managers - CC & Jen. Then there are several shift managers and several more supervisors before you get to people like me, who just want to work there. 90% of the people that work there I do not have a problem with, but there is one I want to punchin the face. Dez.
Dez is transitioning from a supervisor to a shift manager. There are 2-3 shift mangers for every shift in case one is not available. She has followed me around just to point out what I am doing wrong even when there is no reason for her to be where I am or for her to be in the buisness that I am doing because she is suposed to be doing other things. She will find reason to try to argue with me over anything and everything. She has aclled me stupid and slow to my face ant told others infront of me not to go far because I can't handle his kind of work and need others to do my work. ....... and the like.
When I first started, it was bad, but then she started to ease up and everyone told me that she was just strong when you first met her, but she softened. Well, that softening only lasted a few weeks and now she is worse. She is so bad, that I have had several other supervisors, managers, and employees ask why she treats me that way, why I let her treat me that way, and why I have not gone to Mike over how she treats me.
Case in point... I was wrking with a young man the other day who asked me about what "age of concent" means. I was explaining the difference between medical age of concent and sexual age of concent and the different presedents set by judge rulings in interpretng the law of age of concent when she walked into the area in which we were working - and trust me - we had no time to stop working, just make sandwiches on the same table - and started yelling at me about how she knew everything therewas to know about age of concent because she got pregnant of 15, gave birth at 16 and had one kid every year for 4 years after that - so she was an expert. I tried to explain that this did ot make her an expert when she began yelling loudly about how I was not to challenge a manager, causing the young man I was working with to walk away, and several people shoping in the store to stop and look and ask questions about what she was doing or why she was treating me that way, thoroughly embarrising the other shift manager who was working at the register. I just said ok and let her scream herself out until she left the area, never stopping what I was doing - finishing the sandwhich I was making and the one the young man left unfinished and starting a third before she left the area. When the young man returned, he asked what was that about, and I had no answer. He was stunned. Then the other shift manager came back and asked how it started and I couldn't answer, and the young man saved me by saying that Dez had started it on her own really. She was also stunned.
Everytime I work with her, something like this occurs. Many peple are encouraging me to go to Mike about her. They all say that Sheetz has a "no retaliation" policy. Unfortunately, the first time I ever worked overnight, she was to be the manager who was to train me on the night shift chores and obligations. On that night, I ended up alone in the kitchen, making things up as I went because even though I would ask, she would not help me figure what things meant. when the morning shift manager who had trained me the prior week came in asked how it went, I told her I was frustrated because I was left in the kitchen alone many times with no help to figure things out. Less than a week later, I was in the office with Dez as she chewed me out for lying about her... I told her I didn't lie. She then tried to justify why it happened and tole me that the people at sheetz were not narcs. I told her I was sorry her feelings were hurt. This caused her to ride me harshly for a week where I told her at some point that I had been a supervisor longer thans he had been out of igh school and if she needed knowledge as to how to do this correctly to let me know. So, I know that policy asside, she will continue to retaliate any time she feels hurt.... did it or not. ....
I feel anxious any time I know that I might be working with her. I hate going to this job now, even though I started working there as a kind of break from the intense work I have done for so long.
I know all the breathing techniques and ways of dealing with tough people, but after months, I am sick of her riding me and just want to punch her in the face.
Any thoughts?
:) Susie
