Spouses of Transgender Community Group
Being transgender it's not easy but neither for their spouses. This group is created with the intention of helping and getting to know others that are in. the same situation or to just educate those that are on the other side of the fence and want to know how does it feel or how would it feel to be a spouse of a transgender person. The main objective of this group is...
This is SO hard. I have been reading these posts for months now, but the idea of posting one myself made it all too real. I will ask for forgiveness at the beginning because this might be a long post. There is just so much I have pinned up inside, I feel like I’m going to burst. I am in pain but at the same time I feel hollow, empty, a shell of my former self. Last August, shortly after my 20-year anniversary, Doctors told us they thought my husband had cancer. While waiting for tests and results (which we are still dealing with and are keeping a secret from family and friends) we started talking ‘what if’. Somewhere along the way it turned into where we would be if we hadn’t gotten together. I was left speechless when he said he thought he’d be living as a woman. He came home and really opened up to me. Things I could never even dream of hearing. We had the most in-depth discussions we have ever had. For days this went on. In so many ways we were becoming closer than ever, but inside I wanted to scream, cry and just walk out so I could breath. I could see the pain he was feeling, and he kept saying he was scared I would leave him. He expressed that he didn’t want to have bottom surgery but wished he could have top surgery. I stayed calm and let him tell me all he wanted to. It was SO much. I just can’t even begin to tell it all. We discussed how mean he has been over the years and how I started to feel like he was being hurtful on purpose, so that I would leave with the kids and he’d be free to live the life he wanted. The good thing is that he now realizes that, by hiding his feelings, he had turned his frustration and pain onto his family. We have 3 kids, and he is desperately trying to make up for lost time. He says if I’m uncomfortable with anything he’ll ‘put it all away’, but still work on being kind and gentle. I feel like asking him to do that would be selfish of me and to be honest, I just don’t think that’s possible. I have been doing everything I can to be supportive. I listen. I ask questions. I’m there when he says, ‘I need to talk about something to clear my head, because the thoughts are taking over again’. I had one break down I front of him and it hurt him so bad. After that, I kept the crying for the shower, but now I barely shed a tear. I feel numb. I’ve tried to find examples of people who have made it work. Everything I find leaves me feeling hopeless. I know everyone’s path is different. No one story is the same. I’m just struggling to fight the feeling that we’re prolonging the inevitable. I tell myself I am grateful that he told me, but I’m not sure I am. I can see the changes in him and so have our kids. However, I am losing myself. I have been doing things that just AREN’T me. Things, before October, I would NEVER have done. No one knows but me and he wants to keep it that way, or so he says. I’ve dealt with painting his toes and I even bought him a cute little anklet with a wave on it. He loves it and was wearing it all the time. He said he wouldn’t buy any clothes unless I was okay with them. I bought him a few pieces of clothing that I thought I’d be okay with. I guess I thought, and he said, a few small things would be enough. That he’d be okay with just a few things, but it seems like he always wants more. Lately he’s bought himself some things without telling me or even showing me when they arrive (normally he asks me first so make sure it doesn’t bother me). I worry that he’ll do more than that one day. I already told him I didn’t think I could handle dressing in female clothing in public or going on hormones or surgery of any kind. It’s the days when he’s really bubbly, when he says and does certain things that I know he’s feeling more like her, that I seem to lose control and lash out in ways I shouldn’t. Not at him or our kids, but in private, hoping to feel some relief, if only for a moment. And don’t get me started on the intimacy. It’s just all weird. I know I have friends and family who love me and reading these posts I know I am not alone in this, but at the same time I feel SO Alone. Most days I can push everything down… but lately, randomly throughout the day, the thought that this is real, and not some real bad dream, drops me to my knees barely catching my breath. I feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest.
I know the feeling!
I agree with MoonLady, it sounds like your sister is good person to confide in. And I say this because, I didn't tell anyone for about 6 months, but my Mom could smell something was wrong a mile away and she thought I was mad at her. I know people in the trans community don't want to go public for various reasons, but also keeping secrets is a really toxic way to live.
It sounds like both you and your spouse are very caring people, trying not to upset one another. On one hand, that's great to hear! On the other hand, I think it's important to keep in mind that, sometimes in our efforts to not upset other people, we aren't true to ourselves. Sometimes to maintain boundaries or to be true to ourselves, other people will get upset.
One thing we say here a lot is "take care of yourself" and I think that's so true. Keep taking care of yourself, and that will guide you on the path you are meant to be on. *hugs*
You know I think when he first told me there was this split in me. One part wanted to hold him and tell him everything is going to be okay. That we'd be fine, no matter what. The second wanted to take a step back and say 'Woah woah woah... um.. yeah... no! I do love him and for the few times when I actually forget everything we're dealing with, I remember just how much I love him. Then when the thoughts come back, for whatever reason, It's like they come crashing down again. The kids always know that something is bothering me because I get real quiet and emotionless. This can go on for days at a time. I can barely eat, I can't sleep, I feel like I'm lifting weights with my eye lids. You know the scenes in the movies where one person is standing still (or moving slowly) and the world is moving super fast around them? Most of the time I feel like that. The last week wasn't to bad though. It was spring break and we got to spend a lot of time together as a family. It's weird to be looking at us all together, everyone smiling and laughing but know, lingering in the shadows of your mind, is the question of 'what will this family look like in another 6 months.. a year.. 5 years? Will the smiles and laughter be turned to pain and sorrow. I hate thinking that way. He says he never wants his family or our kids to know. Instead of being relieved and thinking 'well at least he doesn't want to ever go public'.. my thought is 'well.. I wonder how long that will last'.
Just out of curiosity... Do any of you find it hard to look your spouse in the eye, at times? What about intimacy... sorry if that's a bit personal... It's just that, everything is just awkward and weird. I'm definitely going to call the therapist tomorrow.. ugh...
I sent you a message if you want someone to talk to. :) Take care <3
I do know that as time passes the desire to transition becomes stronger, at least with my spouse. Whether that happens with your spouse, only time will tell. Things he wanted to just 'try out' have become the norm and he's well into hrt. Many things have changed, many decisions he's made on his own and for us, lack of communication has really had a detrimental affect on our marriage. We're seeing a therapist, who was my therapist, then became our couple therapist and is now my spouse's main therapist. I've mixed feelings on this and not sure if this is a good thing? All I know is I'm trying and taking it one day at a time, which is all any of us can do. Try to take care of yourself and cut yourself some slack on those tough days!
RE: the therapist. You really should have individual therapists. My spouse and I shared in the beginning, but the therapist felt it was too hard to remain unbiased towards each of us. I chose to get a new therapist because it seemed harder to find someone who was well-versed in trans issues, so I thought my spouse should keep her. I am very happy with my therapist now. Plus, we found a third therapist for marriage counseling. We spend a lot on therapy but we have just accepted that is how it will be for a few years and it has been worth every penny. Plus, I hit my health insurance deductible early and then don't have to pay for anything the rest of the year!! Anyway, I would advise against sharing. My two cents.
Again, It has been a HUGE help having you ladies on my side. I haven't had the chance to be on, read and respond to much because he's been home. I'm grateful that he has gone back to work. We need time apart as much as we need time together. LOL.. Why does that sounds odd?
HUGS to you all!
