Spouses of Transgender Community Group
Being transgender it's not easy but neither for their spouses. This group is created with the intention of helping and getting to know others that are in. the same situation or to just educate those that are on the other side of the fence and want to know how does it feel or how would it feel to be a spouse of a transgender person. The main objective of this group is...
Ultimately we ended up talking to our 12 year old son based on the desire to have him find out directly from us.
It is all pretty recent so I have little advice, but to tell you how it's gone so far. Basically, there was NOT a lot of oversharing. The initial conversation was quite brief - still caused some tears. I followed up over the next few days with two private conversations with my son, giving him opportunity to talk more without his dad present. He has some fears (totally understandable). We also let the school counselor know and although his teachers don't need to know details, they can still keep an eye out for any changes in his behavior during the school day. Initially, I found him to be a bit wound up - talking more - for the first week and quickly switching to getting upset. But after the first week, this seems to have gone away. He has not wanted to talk about it. He does say he knows he can both with us or the school counselor. So, we're letting it rest for a bit. If/when his dad acts in ways that are more visible, I plan to address the topic again, but for now, I am giving him some space, as that has been what he wants.
