The CDC claims that nicotine is a "very addictive drug" that can be "as addictive as heroin or cocaine." withdrawal is tough but it will get easier as the hours pass. water, lots of water. some have cut off the ends of straws and used those. I even kept myself busy by washing practically every piece of clothing i had so they wouldn't smell like smoke and then I kept myself busy doing things like cleaning out my cabinets in the kitchen. I didn't smoke in my house but it kept me busy. gum, succers, also helped.come on here and journal. It will help you get thru the cravings.
you can do this. you have to do this for the surgery. hang in there.
The withdrawl symptoms will pass. Do some reading on whyquit.com

Someone told me about electronic cigs that helped them.I tried hers and it does help so I am going today to buy me some and try that. These even look like the real thing with a light on the end and all.You even get a smoke like vapor when you take a draw. The start up pack with charger and cartidges cost less than a carton of cigs, about $30.The refills cost about $10 and last as long as 2 cartons. Here where I live you can get them in all of the tobbacco stores.
this is your quit so whatever you have to do to succeed, you do it.
I am going tomorrow to get the electronic cigs and try it all over again.
Which reminds me --one thing that you will notice when you quit -- you will get sick a lot less often. I have had only 1 cold in the 15 years that I have been quit smoking. I used to have a cold every year and the flu a lot. No flu either since I quit.
Second thing, is do whatever (legal, or course) that you have to in order to quit. If it is the e-cigarette, do it. Chantix, the patch, the gum, whatever. Do whatever you have to do to get off the smoking cigarettes. They do some much damage to your system.
Drink water, chew on straws, chew on gum, read books, find escapism as much as possible. Exercise. Reward yourself, yada, yada, yada. It has all been said here. But also get yourself a non smoking buddy that you can call when you are tempted to smoke. That was the key to me staying off the cigs.
Good luck!!!
