The CDC claims that nicotine is a "very addictive drug" that can be "as addictive as heroin or cocaine." Nicotine is typically eliminated from the body within 2 to 3 days, however, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms may last for much longer depending on the individual. Sadly they will learn later the consequences. I think that it would be very hard to stop teens from smoking if they want to do so, and it will take some radical ideas to have any affect which is hard to implement or enforce.
I started relatively late at 19 but many of my friends started earlier. My parents did not smoke because both of their parents smoked and they hated it, my dad said it made him sick to be around his parents smoking, mom said same, they both recall feeling ill around cigarette smoke. But I started smoking and my brother chewed tobacco for many years, he was able to quit. My daughter was like my folks-hated the smell, hated the smoke, would feel sick to her stomach around it.
I hope that more teens can influence other teens to not smoke, peer pressure to NOT smoke-that may help, other teens may listen to teens about not smoking. That is why that TheTruth.com campaign is so great, it features young people who are speaking out against smoking.
I think its great that there is now more education and programs to reach the teenagers. I was a very young teen when I (foolishly) started smoking along with a few friends. & as we know how quickly one can become addicted.
Grannie, (re: where do the kids get the ciggs.and money?) where theres a will there's a way! I had one smoking parent and my friends all had at least one smoking parent, some bought cartons and we could steal a pack a few times a week and no one seemed to notice any missing. At least we never heard any comments....from parents.(not proud of the fact we stole them!)
Then- (some friends stole from stores) this was back when cigarettes were on end aisles in supermarket lines, real easy to pocket a pack or two. & other times the older kids got ciggs for us. & like someone else said: allowances. & I used to babysit.
I wonder if I would have heard the messages, had the "kick butts" education been around for teens in my youth. Well, I hope it helps as many teens as possible not light up or to stop smoking.....
I'm so happy to be smoke free now!
