Smoking Addiction & Recovery Support Group
The CDC claims that nicotine is a "very addictive drug" that can be "as addictive as heroin or cocaine." Nicotine is typically eliminated from the body within 2 to 3 days, however, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms may last for much longer depending on the individual. If you are trying to kick the habit, this community is dedicated to giving smokers the...
What ever triggers you to smoke....do something else. Coffee was a trigger for me, so I switch to drinking a coke for breakfast, that lasted abut 2 days I switched to Iced Tea. Just those little things you do that is a trigger change them.
I think you will do fine, you made your mind up and thinking of your fianc is a big plus. Kudos to you for that.
If you have the time come to Roll Call it helps keep you accountable and we can celebrate your quit time with you. Also if you can Pledge each day gives you a deviation.
Keep us posted on your progress. Remember it is a work in progress that will never end.
What helped me most was a "smoking buddy"... who was also trying to stop. We didn't have the internet back then, but would have used the net to find others in the same spot.
Maybe you can add all of us as friends, and message us when you feel like you need a boost to keep going without one?
you can do it.. and will!
you may need help , look into the ways, nicotine patch, chantix, gum.
and you can always post here and ask for help or support. and come here and pledge not to smoke.
Keep trying, never quit quitting.
I went to hypnosis
I said affirmations (I told myself I was a non smoker in the mirror -every night and every morning for about 3 weeks before I quit and continue to do it now.)
I quit coffee about a month before I started the hypnosis.
I read "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking"
Started making myself eat something for breakfast (Breakfast used to be coffee and a couple of cigarettes)
Started striving to exercise everyday. (Just a 10 minutes walk can make me feel loads better.)
When I got an urge, I would chug a 8-12 oz glass of water.
I added up the money I spent on cigarettes for one week, one month, one year, and estimated what I have spent over my lifetime. (Enough to pay all my debts if I had it today - it helps to see it written down.) I changed my beliefs that had me using cigarettes as a reward.(After two weeks off cigarettes I could reward myself with new expensive shoes with the $70-$100 I did not spend on cigs.) I started taking a break when I needed one, instead of using the need for a cigarette as an excuse for a break.
I changed my belief that cigarettes relieve stress, the only stress they relieve is the addiction to nicotine they created.
I changed my attitude about being quit: In past quits I would pine for a cigarette when I had an urge or saw others smoking - Now I look at the urges or cravings as the death throes of the evil dragon that nicotine is and I am winning.
I continue to use affirmations and hypnosis tapes 2-4 times per week, I picked up 2-3 new hobbies that would be difficult to smoke at the same time. (hiking, art work, photography)
I hope some of these things help you.
Good luck!
I will be around all day and check in often. I'm not into the Superbowl, so if you need help.....give a holler :)
Get a plan in place. Replace smoking with something else that is enjoyable. It will take some getting use to the replacement activity, but stick with it and eventually, it will become a habit just like smoking....except healthier and more rewarding as you will have something to show for it instead of a pile of ashes and butts.
Keep telling yourself that smoking for whatever reason is NOT an option. Drink a ton of water. go out for a walk or do something.....anything to keep yourself distracted and busy during an urge or trigger. I will not lie.....it's not going to be easy, but it will be worth it. There is no magic wand to make you stop. You have to take "action Jackson" in order to make it work (this is a term used on me when I was in treatment for an addiction.....in other words it takes action and not wishful thinking to make it happen).
Don't let your guard down for one second. Don't undermine Mr. Nicodemon as he is waiting to pounce on your vulnerability at any given second. don't entertain the jerk by hanging out with other smokers (stay inside when they go out for a smoke.....and keep busy).....don't say you can have one or two drags off their cigarettes.....it NEVER works like that....you are an addict just like an alcoholic. Think of it this way....you can't just have one cigarette...they run in packs :P
I'm rooting for you.....but you still have to do the work...ok?
I'm on standby wishing you the very best!
