Smoking Addiction & Recovery Support Group
The CDC claims that nicotine is a "very addictive drug" that can be "as addictive as heroin or cocaine." Nicotine is typically eliminated from the body within 2 to 3 days, however, physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms may last for much longer depending on the individual. If you are trying to kick the habit, this community is dedicated to giving smokers the...
So jump in with both feet, pick a quit date, throw away all smoking paraphanalia and cigarettes on quit date, drink tons of water, come to roll call and pleges daily, keep positive, and ask for help here and by your doctor. We are all standing by waiting to help as is your doctor.
Hope to see you here.....we love quitters :)
I've tried to prepare myself the best I can for this quit.
The most important things I know:
I really want to be free
A slip is not a mudslide if I slip, get back up immediately
The only shame is in giving up my quit
I smoked for 35+ years and I've quit this time for 36 days so far and have no intention of going back to it. It's hard and it's scary but you can't be its prisoner anymore. Break thoswe chains and be free. You CAN do it!!!
Look at how smoking controls your life. Want your life back? Start by writing down every reason you want to quit. Print that list and post it everywhere you smoke and don't smoke (like in the shower). Decide how you want to quit, i.e. cold turkey, NRT's (Nicotine replacement therapies like patches, gum, inhalers etc.) Chantix....there is no "right" way to quit, the only right way is what works for you.
The scary part is letting go of an addiction that has run and to some extent ruined your life. The good news is that you see positive results pretty quickly like skin tones that are not cigarette ashy gray, you smell better, the money not spent on sucking poison is huge, oh I could go on and on but you will realize so many early benefits of living smoke free.
Stick with us. So many of us start out with the idea that we will never smoke again only to allow that damn nicodemon into our brain that whispers "It's ok, you can handle just one" when in fact none of us can handle "just one" because we are ADDICTS.
You absolutely CAN do this. All you have to do is WANT this for yourself. We're here to help, give you hints, support, hugs, sometimes tough love but we all want what you want....to love smoke free and love it. I know, I quit almost 6 years ago and can't ever imagine wanting to put a cig in my mouth ever again. I started out exactly where you are. Want to change your life? Change your mind!
Just take it one day at a time. You've done this before, so you know there are probably a few rough days (& possible up to a few rough weeks) before you hit that place where things are more sane & you are back in control of your mind. Plan for that, take great care of yourself & commit to riding it out. If the thought of the whole day is too much, just take it one craving at a time.
You've done it before, you can do it again. This really could be the last time.
