I've had cancer - a lymphoma - and I'm alive and kicking over 12 years later.
That said, a sore throat for a month is likely to be a persistant infection and smoking won't be helping that. Anything that hurts is usually not cancer. Cancer only hurts in its later stages. However, use this as your motivation to quit and set yourself free.
