Sleep Apnea Support Group
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. People with sleep apnea partially awaken as they struggle to breathe, but in the morning they may not be aware of sleep disturbances.

Obstructive sleep apnea is causing brain damage by breaking down the blood-brain barrier a vital player in the safeguarding of brain tissue. A recent study at UCLA uncovered the first evidence that proves the dangers of obstructive sleep apnea on the brain.

Not surprised. Since I started CPAP therapy and then reading about sleep apnea in general, I think it is one of the most deadly, and untreated, health problem there is. With home sleep apnea tests now available and easy to use, I think that testing for sleep apnea is going to become a lot more common, which, hopefully, will save many people from an early death.

It's a killer, that's for sure. We know it causes heart damage. Very scary having OSA. I just hope it doesn't become the "disease of the month" with the general population. When something gets a lot of attention, all of a sudden people have it. Happened with Carpel Tunnel. Suddenly so many people had it and needed to wear a wrist brace. Other health issues too but I can't get my brain to work right now lol Thanks for posting this!

It's been just over 3 years for me and I'm grateful beyond belief for CPAP...what I'm not grateful for is my doctor who didn't recognize my symptoms. It went untreated for so long my memory still doesn't function properly and my cognitive thinking...well...sometimes that's a whole different story. When I hear people describing symptoms they're having, I try to tell them just how dangerous OSA is and can be and to consider getting tested. I tell them how broken down my whole being was and that damage has been done. My boss must have done some big research because he treats me differently now. When I forget something he gently reminds me instead of being an ogre and simply accusing me of not doing something. I wish there was consistency in the information that appears in the media...more truth about the seriousness of it all and not the "making fun" of the machine and mask you see in programs. It burns me up.
