If you or a loved one has skin cancer, this is the community to discuss your experience, find support, and meet others going through the same. Skin cancer is a malignant growth on the skin, which can have many causes, including repeated severe sunburns or long-term exposure to the sun. I don't think that the Skin Cancer Board ever was that busy even in the old days. Did you happen to notice how long it has been since the last person posted on this Board? (I forgot to look.)
Personally, I do not post unless I have something that I can add to the conversation, or post any specific personal experience that I have had (or have). This rule of mine carries over to the other non-medical Boards that I belong too; if I cannot add to what has already been posted I move on. I guess that I am not "the lean on type". As a retired engineer, I just stick to facts and not comment much beyond that,
One thing for sure, there are still many people with skin cancer and other medical problems, they just must not post here anymore or, if new, cannot find DS when searching.
I have no idea who pays for DS or who manages it. It does not seem to have any overlords since I have not seen a bad post removed.
Oh well, maybe someday DS will make a comeback.
It’s just sad to see that there isn’t the support around this page or group like there was, even if it was small.
It’s hard to find where to go to find like minded people to reach out to, to talk to that know what your going through, that might have suggestions, ideas or just be supportive when your feeling down or not at your best.
It’s hard to lean on your family all the time or at all as I hate to worry them and they really don’t understand, I mean how can they they are lucky enough to not have gone through any of this and at times they just say the wrong thing and it it just makes things so much worse so hence I just don’t say anything at all anymore.
I guess I’ll just stick to keeping quite and keeping these feelings to myself as I have been.
But if anyone does read this post or does come back it would be lovely to chat and support each other again.
I’m sorry to hear that you have just gone through your first skin cancer.
How are you feeling?
I’m unfortunately not new to this dreaded illness so if you have any questions or just need to vent, download or chat please feel free to reach out xx
I’m pretty good at knowing what to look out for these days myself. To be honest if it’s on my body I’m not too concerned as cuts scrapes and scars there don’t bother me, but every time I’ve seen one on my face I go into absolute panic mode and I honestly pray to god I’m wrong.
There are a few things that you can do to help yourself, one to combat them before getting them, and two to test them without getting a biopsy.
If your interested in knowing more I’d be happy to share xx
“ The pill—the vitamin B3 supplement called nicotinamide—cut the rate of new squamous-cell and basal-cell skin cancers by 23% compared with placebo after 1 year among patients at high risk for skin cancer. Nicotinamide also reduced the risk for developing actinic keratosis, a common precancer of the skin.”
I was on the skin cancer trial for this study and ever since have been taking them religiously.
