I have been diagnosed with superficial spreading melanoma, Stage II. I am having the SLNB this week and was curious of other peoples experiences with this surgery. I was told first about the dye injection, then I will go in to Outpatient surgery where they will do the sentinal node, have it tested then I will go to surgery. The surgeon booked the center for a 2-21/2 hour surgery. Yikes, this seems like a lot. I will question the surgeon, but I would like to hear other opinions.
I recently had this done.
I went into the hospital and had the dye injection first. My wide excision surgery was scheduled at the same time. My surgery lasted approximately 3 1/2 hours.
He took the skin and tissue around and under my melanoma and then did a skin graph to replace the skin and tissue removed. Then he removed 2 sentinal nodes, and 13 others.
I was in recovery for about 1 1/2 hours after that.
