Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness and/or electrical zaps. My rheumy prescribed a second generation gabapentine for me, and after awhile my numbness actually improved, and the electrical problems diminished significantly. Gabitril didn't give me the same fuzzy-thinking side-effect that I couldn't tolerate with Neurontin. It was also great for reducing the pain from Fibromyalgia.

I am currently having the same problem. After a day of some walking at an amusement park my left calf began to really ache, my ankle was a little swollen and I could not put any pressure on my foot. This has never happened to me before. I also have a bad back so I thought it might be from that, when I got home I called my back doctor who ordered an epidural shot for Monday. I also called my Rheumy and he put me on a small dose of prednisone. I really hope one of these helps because the pain is really frustrating. I am already on gabapentine and it is not helping for this problem.
About exercise, my doctor recommended some pool therapy but I can't start until after my injection. I am hopeful that it will give me some relief it has in the past.
Good luck I hope you find a solution. What works for one person doesn't always work for the other but maybe you'll get lucky.
