Single Parenting Support Group
Today being raised by a single parent is not uncommon. About three in ten children live in a single parent home. The most common type of single parent home is one with only a mother. However, single father homes are the fastest growing type of family situation; 60% growth in the last ten years alone.
One of my fur babies (dog) has been sick for awhile. We almost lost her during surgery to get her teeth cleaned. we choose not to put her through that again.
friday she was having coughing fits due to her lungs and heart filled with fluid and she collapsed twice while my little man was at school.
my mom and I made the decision to bring her to the vet to be put down due to her being very very sick.
It;s finally hit my little man who is 7 that she is not coming back. So the meltdowns have begun. my little man has been Dx with ADHD. we have explained that she was very sick and old but that doesn't seem to be working.
anyone else experienced this situation and what worked for you ?

Did your son get to say goodbye? Did you give him the option of going to the vet to be with her at the end?
When I was a kid, my cat was hit by a car, and I'm still hurt that I never got to say goodbye and be with her at the end.
My best advice, is if he's unhappy about that...to apologize. If it was an emergency type of situation where you rushed the dog to the vet, then explain that. I would also have a ceremony of sorts in the backyard. If you have the ashes, you can bury them. If not, you can bury the leashes or a favorite toy.
Last, why not ask your son what would help? He may only be 7, but kids tend to be honest about that sort of stuff.
In any case, hugs. My dog was my first child. And I still miss him.
