Single parenthood is often opted for by the parent (as in divorce, adoption, artificial insemination, surrogate motherhood, or extramarital pregnancy), or an unforeseeable occurrence (as in the death of one parent or abandonment by one parent).

My daughter, like alot of pre-schoolers, loves the Disney princesses. When my stbx and I were still together we were saving for a trip to Florida with the two kids to Disney World.

Last weekend my daughter was in the car with me, and asked if we were still going to Disney. I said "yes" of course. She's four now and I'd like her to be a year or two older at least.

But, I always had envisioned going there as a family. Now I don't know how it is going to work out. I am totally comfortable with just me and my daughter alone, we get along famously. But the idea seems... off.

Maybe we can arrange to go with other family, or maybe I will have a new gf by that time who will go.

I'm just a little down, I guess, because this was my daughter's dream, and it will no longer be the whole family like we had always said.

4 is old enough. Go ASAP just you and her. She will remember. You need to start creating new memories.

Oh and don't even think of going with the new girl friend. When she is 18 your daughter will still remember when daddy took her new girl friend to Disney and she was allowed to tag along in the back ground.

I will probably try to swing it next summer, once custody is more ironed out. I looked at airline prices and they aren't so bad.

And I didn't think of the gf thing that deeply. I guess I was more thinking that anyone I met at my age (specifically one lady I've been eyeing) would have children of their own.

I took my 3 kids to Disney about 4 months after the divorce was final. It was a little hectic, but we loved every minute of it. If you can afford it, do it. You won't regret it.

And I agree with Stevejj, do not under any circumstances take a new gf. This is a precious time for you and your daughter. Don't spoil it.

Thanks for all the advice. I am thinking I need to do this, sooner rather than later. I'll probably wait until the tax refund comes in then make some plans. Even if its only for a day or two down there, because I think that the money spent will be worth it in the memory she will have for a lifetime.

It also gives me a goal to save for right now.

I just got back from taking that long-thought about trip to Disney World with my now 6-year-old daughter. She is still into the Disney Princesses and is young enough that its all so real to her. IT WAS POSSIBLY THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE. We bonded so close. It was so amazing seeing the look in her eyes as she met those princesses and other characters. I will never forget this special time I had with her.

I would day four is still a little bit young, but it depends on your expectations. If you just want to go to Magic Kingdom and stay in the areas appropriate for her age, then it can work. I started taking my kids when my daughter was six and my son was four, and they can still remember it 16 years later. Find out which characters she likes and do the character dining. :)

If you do go, I agree, don't bring the GF the first time. My daughter is 22 and married now and still goes every year. This January I am going with my son (20 now), my daughter and her husband, it's our 18th trip. Lots of amazing memories. :)

Like others....forget bringing a new gf! This should be your and your daughter's time, new memories. Focus on her! She may not have a whole family of multitude of people, but she'll have YOU and the fun to cherish!
