December came, he broke up with me, it broke my heart. Wow. Like nothing else ever has. Well, except for when he got in touch with me a few weeks ago, apologized profusely, said he wanted to be a couple again, then stopped talking to me the minute I didn't do things the way that he wanted me to.
I would be remiss if I did not tell you this. Heartbreak is easier to work through when you're 16 (IMHO, no offense to any "young'uns" out there going through it, I know that it hurts like hell). By the time that you're 27, 28, 30, most people have developed coping mechanisms for when a relationship fails. I hadn't, so it hit me especially hard.
Honestly, pat, I hope that the first person you meet is that wonderful, special someone, and that everything works out like a fairytale for you. But after 30 years, I have finally learned the hard way what wishes and hopes are worth (sorry to sound so cynical). When it does happen for you - and it will - just be careful. Go slowly. Guard your heart (easier said than done, right?). I'm not in any way saying don't fall in love. Just take your time and make sure this person isn't playing you or too wounded to be a good partner.
And I hope that you have good friends and family to help you judge and to fall back on. I should have listened more to mine. ;)
It will happen for you. And when it does, may you be the happiest person in the world, and may it all have been worth the wait.
Good luck (and if you want to talk more, feel free to message me),
Caroline
