Shyness Support Group
Shyness is a feeling of insecurity that certain people experience while being among others, talking with others, asking favors of others, etc. The initial cause of shyness can vary. Scientists have located some genetic data that supports the hypothesis that shyness is at least partially genetic.
Figure out how much time you have to spare during the week and find places that interest you, like book clubs or sports and find groups. for instance, I like martial arts so I do that.
Maybe you can find a group that meet in your area on this site
http://www.meetup.com/
I found an opera/music group and a biggest loser group that meets near me. This helped me, although I still enjoy a good book at the park.
Often it's just a matter of finding the right people to connect with. If you find most of the people in your surroundings aren't what you're looking for, keep trying anyway. You will in time find some people with whom you have common values and common experiences, or at least common likes.
Find some icebreakers. I know one guy who always carries several packs of gum in his pockets and offers people sticks of gum as a way of starting off. Others methods include making a compliment (Nice dog, is it a collie?), asking a question (Do you know if there is a coffee shop in this area?), or making an observation (It's a beautiful day, isn't it?)
It does take effort for me to feel comfortable with people I don't really know. But I can do it if I have to, but I try to set time limits.
