Shopping Addiction Support Group
Oniomania (also known as shopping addiction), is the compulsive desire to shop. Similar to other compulsive behaviors, sufferers often experience the highs and lows associated with addiction. The purchase generates a mood of satisfaction, gives their life meaning, and lets them forget about their sorrows.
Hi, I'm new here and my mum is a long term shopping addict. She's probably had this for 30 yrs, maybe more.
Last year her spending got so bad she ran out of money. She is a pensioner and had spent all her money including any savings (these are deducted automatically by the bank each week, but she always withdraws it in the end).
She told my brother who has always given her money which doesn't help her face the fact that she has a problem, and he cleared all her debts for her and made himself broke doing it since he was out of work when he did it.
After that happened she promised she would budget, stay on top of her money and out of her overdraft, but these last couple of weeks she's been spending every single day I've been at work. Random things we don't need etc. and right now we need a new iron and a new washing machine badly. And who's gonna end up paying for it? Me and my brother that's who, or maybe just me!
It's not fair on anyone around her, especially during these harsh times in the economy for her children to essentially help her keep spending needlessly. She's learnt that she doesn't need to overcome this because there will always be someone to pick up the bill for her. But we're all gonna run out of money here very quickly if I or we can't help her somehow. Can anyone give me some good advice please?

My credit cards are now locked in the safe
She gets pre-purposed cash to do her shopping
It has helped, but she still finds ways around it. I'll be interested to see if she is willing to admit the scope of the problem and fix it before it ruins our marriage.
