Shopping Addiction Support Group
Oniomania (also known as shopping addiction), is the compulsive desire to shop. Similar to other compulsive behaviors, sufferers often experience the highs and lows associated with addiction. The purchase generates a mood of satisfaction, gives their life meaning, and lets them forget about their sorrows.
I have always been "ok" with it, but after meeting a "guy" I started to desperately look good so he would like me, and by buying new clothes it would give me the "very short" illusion that I was pretty and looked good..
If you are just buying things because your in a new relationship once all the anxiety starts lessening as you get more comfortable with each other you will notice you won't feel the need to impress him as much. If the relationship is more than superficial you will gain confidence when you start to understand the reasons he is attracted to you, it just takes time. I understand no one can make you feel confident it is something you have to find on your own through your abilities and strengths. In a healthy relationship you find out a lot about yourself through one another and you will find out what he sees in you and Im willing to bet it's more than new clothes.
Like I had to buy new clothes and take photos and post on facebook so he would see and probably like me.. but he doesn't like me at all, we are not together and don't even talk anymore..
The thing is that my need to buy stuff didn't go away at all... I am almost 25 and I never had a boyfriend, I feel like there is something wrong with me that causes men to not see me and not like me at all, so I try to cover myself with new clothes and makeup to try and look a bit appealing..
It's really sad cause the real me just enjoys t shirts and sweatpants.. but i feel that if im like this then i will never get a boyfriend..
I am desperate that I dont go shopping for months now, cause i have absolutely no money, I spend my days in online stores filling carts and trying to believe i am buying these things, then i close the page and act like i bought stuff, even though i havent, so i feel a little better..
It really sucks..
When I was in highschool there was a guy he was my best friend, We hung out together all the time. He was sort of dorky he wasn't athletic or tall he had a hard time getting girlfriends. I liked him because of his personality I was comfortable around him and there were little things about him I thought were cute. He knew I liked him and said he thought of me as his sister. We were such good friends strangers used to think we would get married one day. It never happened it didn't matter what I did he did not like me in that way. I never had a hard time getting dates and while we were friends I had a few boyfriends, I think sometimes he got a little jealous. Sometimes he would even act interested he even held my hand once or twice but nothing came of it. I felt rejected especially when I would see him date girls that were very sexually active and had acne or weight problems. I felt like there must be something defective about my personality it was a big self esteem blow. I even got bold enough to ask him why he wasn't attracted to me he just said " I don't know". As I got older I realized the girls he was going for were because they were very sexually active and thats what he wanted in highschool. Years down the road... I move away and go off to college I meet a great guy and he proposed. Guess who likes me now all of the sudden? The guy from highschool can't deal with the fact that Im no longer "available" for him . He wrote me several letters begging for me to leave my fiance and move in with him. We are no longer friends it sucked being "the friend in the box" to him while he screwed around.
Your still very young, a lot of men are like my highschool friend Travis. It doesn't matter how you dress or what you say even if they do find you attractive we can't control their actions only our own. I noticed the things "quality" men found attractive about me was when I stopped looking for them or was taken and focused on my degree. Men are sort of annoying like that they come around when you don't want them to it's like a game to them. Focus on your talents and get involved. I know if your like me, Im sort of anti-social I rather not deal with people but it really is healthier and you will feel better if you force it. There's a site called meetup and there's a bunch of groups find an interest you have and join a group. One thing leads to another, once you put yourself out there. If you don't let ppl know what you have to offer, other than great clothes, then no one is going to get a chance to get to know you for who you are.
