Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients.
Has anyone ever had a Lipoma (Tumor) or a cyst in the SAME area where PHN is located? Today I was diagnosed with a Lipoma and I'm in a Catch 22. It's causing more pain along my left ribcage, but if I choose to have surgery, it could cause even more pain than I'm in already. I'm 22 years old (ironic) and I've been heavily advised by my doctor to fully think about what would be best. I can leave it and be fine, or I can have it removed and hope it eases my PHN a little. I don't know what to do... why couldn't it just be on my right side? I've been given a referral to see a surgeon - but we all know surgeons are ready to jump in.

updates in my mail. Anyway...If I were you I sure would take the chance that removing it would help you and take some of the pain away. Even if you feel more pain at the time from the surgery, you would think as you heal it would start to feel better. Maybe discuss all of this with the surgeon before you decide. I know that when I had my carpal tunnel surgeries last summer, the surgeon was able to tell me exactly how it would feel and how long it would take to heal and the pain go away. You don't know happy it makes me to hear you're doing better. I've been thinking non-stop about whether or not to have surgery. And I'm leaning more towards having it. I can feel the lump, I'm assuming even more so since I have the PHN. If I have it removed, it may just ease it. I'm going to make an appointment next week at the UCLA Medical Center because that's an amazing hospital and my mom has had all her surgeries there. I'll be making an appointment with a surgeon and the pain management center to see what they have to say about it.
